Limp home mode

What are the characteristics of limp home mode ? Why does it do this, and what can be done to counteract the problem. I have an 87 IROC that is doing this continually, but I cannot find a reason why. Anyone help ?

The Delco will go into limp home mode if the ECM can't make sense of the sensor inputs it has. Control is then executed by the network resistors (netres) on the Memcal. This is designed to save your motor.

You should have a code set that will tell you what the ECM thinks is the problem. Post this and you'll get some better advice.

****.. so it actually could be a jacked up sensor.... It started doing this after I attempted to install a ADS super chip, and after I installed a SLP CAI. I took the chip out and put the stock back in because it wouldn't start with the superchip... I thought I might have jacked up my ECM...

Yes, it could be a sensor fault. But you may still have fried your ECM At least replacing them is cheaper than replacing a fried aftermarket ECM. You should know what the problem is when you check the codes.

Well, gotta breathe some new life into this thread.... still need some help folks. Since this original thread, i've taken my car to the mechanic and he has come to the conclusion that the problem is either my computer or prom. I have a 1987 IROC Z28 L98 5.7L 350 TPI, can someone tell me if this ECM would work for it despite what the auction says.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2432839235

Additionally, can someone recommend a place where I can get a prom replacement for this one cheap?

The 165 ecm has a reputation of chronic undiagnosable problems. And replacing them is common.

The other common failure is the MAF itself.
It can die without setting a code.

Try unplugging the MAF, if it runs the same, that would be an indicator that it is in fact dead.

It always pays to have a good stock ecm around.

Got a new MAF on the way as well.. Would that ECM work though? Better yet, should I just try to go through my local dealer for one ?

For the right price the ebray one would be worth gambling on.

The dealership might want a core thou.
The updated numbers I have for the 165 are 16198259 and 16198445. No guarantees on accuracy, thou.
