It's for 1987(ish) A-body (Celebrity, 6000, Cierra, Cutlass & Century) with 2.8 V6 Auto.

Cannot use it for V8 applications.

So can I still use the ECM if I get the correct Memcal? Its a 01227730. Or should I just trash the whole thing and start digging through the local bone yards Thanks again!

Im not %100 but I have heard the the ecm is identical its just the memcal that would need to be replaced as that is what is different between a v8 and v6. Maybe someone else can give you second opinion.

A 1227730 is a 1227730.
The calibration in that particular one, is useless, for use in a V8.
You just need to buy a memcal for a v8 to work with.

The calibration defines the application.

OMIGOSH! I think this just answered a question I was about to ask, and I may post if I don't get a response.

If I had a V8 memcal, I can't just change the flag in the bin to make it work with a V6? What I'm wanting to do is use a 1227165 on my 2.8 S-10. I want to do this to get started on burning chips before I get to the Camaro. I was planning on using a '165 with a 4 cyl code base (uses MAP not MAF on a 4 cyl) , and modifying it to run a V6. I would only have to change like 2 or 3 pins in the connectors to do this! I prefer the 165 ECM for my "Experimentation" since it's a P4 (More advanced?) and one of the possibilities for the Camaro when I get to putting EFI on it.

If this won't work, I guess I have to find a 4.3 AT bin for a 1227747 ecm. That one is a direct plug-in, in fact, I tried out one from a C-1500 (Actually was the newer 16144288, but all the wiring is the same) and it started and ran, but no A/C. I think the 4.3 Blazer from 1990 with AT will do what I want, I just need to find the correct bin.

I have access to all the wiring diagrams I need to do virtually any swap, so any ideas are appreciated!

Why not use a 7730 with a V6 Memcal? 7730s are cheap and plentiful and easy to find. In fact, you are very likely to find a V6 Memcal that will work as well. V6 Memcals are the most common Memcal when you find a 7730. Many wrecking yards just toss those away.

I believe this topic was discussed why you cant use a v6 memcal with a v8 engine and visa versa. The main reason is in the knock circuitry is specific for each application by cylinder volume and should not be mixed for best performance.

Yeah, sorry I haven't researched it yet, I was just reading this and thought I saw a light bulb light up for me!

Glenn,
The main reason for not going to a 7730 is the amount of rewiring needed for something that will be temporary. The 7165 is close to the same pinout that I need, I thought it might work. I actually have a 7730 on the shelf at work waiting for something to do, and I have a MEMCAL from a 2.8 MPI (MAF) car. Now, if I was to tackle this task, I would just use that MEMCAL and load up a .bin for a MAP application, and wire it accordingly? I may consider doing this! It would at least get me going on burning chips and learning some!

I suppose now I'm off to find some of the discussions on the differences in the v6 and v8 MEMCAL's, or is there even anything more in-depth than what has already been stated in this post?

Thanks for the help
