ads superchips

I just bought an ads superchip for my 1987 305 TPI Transam.
I bought it on ebay for $40.00. Is this a good chip? I remember Summit selling them a few years ago, but now can find no website or anything. Did I buy a lemon or do they really work?

You should look through some of the back posts of those supposed superchips. Im not sure about that brand but essentially someone had been been reading the bins off of those chips and the differences were really minor (usually just some timing changes). Seems like a waste of money to me. I guess if you cant burn your own then I guess it would be ok. I would be wary though because I read posts of them doing more bad then good.

Too rich with too much timing just about always fools the butt dyno.
A G-Tech or 1/4 mile pass are the real judges about if it really worked or not.

It helped your shift points? I think not. Our ECMs do not control anything with regard to the transmission except for torque converter lockup.

Actually the tune can effect shifting somewhat.
The HP level can change the line to govenor pressure ratios.
So the LOWER the HP the firmer the shift.

grumpy im not sure if what you siad about th shifting is true. its possiable however that if the car was accelerating faster the shift would actually lower becuase the governor spring tension would be overcome with centrifgula force much faster. but then thats getting into s subejct like angular acceleration and thats could take a 1000 posts to scratch the surface.

Let me clarify that some.
The higher the HP the higher the shift point.
The lower HP CAN cause firmer shifting so shouldn't be taken as an indicator of more HP, without looking at the RPM.

The higher the HP the more the convertor slips the higher the shift. Basicly it takes more RPM to get the output shaft and therefore the governor to the same speed.

The higher the HP the softer the shift. Hard shifts come from excess pressure. The higher the HP the less extra pressure (beyond what it takes to just shift to the next gear) you have.

You bought a lemon. I had one and when I first got my eprom burning equipment I was STUNNED to see the timing table. It was the worst spark table I've ever seen. A blind monkey banging on a keyboard could have done better.

It does lock the TCC a few MPH higher, but nothing to get excited about. Depending on where the TCC locks, it can feel like a shift point.

The only use I found for my ADS Superchip was to pull the e-prom from the holder, insert a flash prom and use it for burning.

Or torque. And this is EXACTLY how I determine if I have improved my power. Works for part throttle and WOT. Much better than trying to feel the acceleration. So I aim for the mushiest part throttle shifts (less TPS means less TV pressure) and softer WOT shifts (more top end means a softer shift).
