Any P1, win 95/98, 48 mb RAM, 2 gig HD is waaaaay more than enough. The only thing I would stress is to get one with an Active Matrix screen (A.K.A. TFT Display) you do not want a DSTN or passive matrix display.

I totally agree. Mine isn't TFT and it's a total pain to get the right angle to view. You might also want one with a touchpad mouse instead of roller ball. Ever try moving the mouse in a moving car?

just say no to win95. time to let go of that one. ;-)

make sure your laptop can at least run win98. this is highly recommended, as you can't forget that you can spend about $100 on a relatively decent laptop now (300+ mhz) and the laptop is the most important link in the chip/datalogging tuning process.

don't skimp too much.

just MHO.

Why are you trying to move a mouse in a moving car?.

You should stop, then do your note taking, and laptop stuff.

The best way to do any of this chip tuning stuff is to data log then review the logs in detail, and then make whatever changes.

Rolling down the road and typing or trying to note changes, is dangerous. There is no reason not to stop, and then do whatever. The few seconds it takes isn't at all critical.

Either I did not word it right, or I did not explain myself to well. I do not want to ride the roads and type or change anything on the setup, I "would" like to get info from ECM, change some things on future setups desired, program a chip and put it back in, if that is worded any better, after all, I can't really drv. that well anyway. Sorry for the confusion.

Unless you're riding as a passenger... I've done this a couple of times with a friend driving the car for me while I monitor live performance. I hate touch pads though... finger/thumb mouse all the way!!!

I'm sorry folks, I must be missin something here somewhere, in which I am in the embryo stages of learning this, but can you not download data from the ECM onto a laptop, with the right software, still tryin to find that one also for the 6299, CARRY IT HOME, and then, do the changes you desire. I didn't mean to imply that I was going to be drving and "moving" a mouse, Hell I can't use a cell phone while movin, come on guys. I didn't want to buy a useless laptop, I just needed to know what MB, GB, MF MHZ,etc. Thanks

I don't. I'm always the passenger when I'm scanning. I tell the wife what I want her to do so I can pay full attention to what's getting scanned.
We're not idiots here. btw - welcome back.
