Swap to SD
Well I think I have finally talked myself into swapping over to SD (MAF is too much of a pain to tune) and practice tuning on the 305 before I start the build up of the 350 or 383. Now for a few questions (software first) 1. What would a good starting bin be for a stock LG4 305 with a crane powermax2020 (previously compucam 2020)? 2. Where can I find VEMaster, did a search on the forums but can not find any links that work? Now the hardware, can you get the second 32 pin ECM connector and terminals from GM or would it be easier to go to the salvage yard and find a donor from another vehicle?
Thanks

For me, doing either correctly takes about the same amount of time to get them correct.
Or are you commenting on the fact that the MAF's lack of resolution table wise for fuel makes it that much easier?. If so then that's ignoring all the little details other then WOT.
But, for those that settle for juggling the I/C and call it close enough, then yes, MAF can be roughed in quicker, IMO.
If MAF is so much easier to tune, the why are ALL the aftermarket ecms MAP?.
Some facts instead of opinion, please. Or if your going to post opinion, please say that it is in fact opinion, not portray opinion as fact.

Try and get to a junkyard and get like a foot or so of harness material from anything running a 1227730. There are a number of candidates other then F Bodies, ie cavaliers.
A search on this board should get you several URLs for guys that have done it already. Mike Davis on one name that comes to mind.

IMHO, I actually think MAF is much easier to tune from a beginner's perspective. If it's a relatively mild combo you can often leave the MAF tables alone ... that's much different from SD where you need to dial in the VE tables even for a mild combo. However, with that said, I definitely like SD much better ... especially for the more radical combos. Why? Geez, where do I start? The fueling might be more time consuming to dial in but it's a more logical direct approach (IMHO). Reversion is not as much of an issue in a SD system. I don't have to worry about MAF placement. I don't have to worry about the MAF crapping out. I don't have to worry about fudging the fueling for PE. The spark routines are better. Tons more that I am not going into right now.

Please take your own advice before asking others to. MAF IS easier to get close than S/D is, it takes a lot less tinkering and playing with the tables. I own both MAF and S/D, the MAF is much easier and has a shallow learning curve when compared to S/D. I've also talked to several people that have tuned both systems, thay all agree that MAF is easier. S/D may be more precise, but MAF is easier.

Now reread what I wrote which was to get it CORRECT.
Like you said, S/D is more precise.
Trying to get a MAF really right when there is the lack of resolution to get it correct is much more difficult. It's the precision that allows MAP to be so much nicer. But, again this all relavent to Correct as opposed to close enough.
Not to mention that he said he was going to be going to a 383, and the larger displacements magnify the differences.
And the higher you spin the engine the lack of the last few rows of entries for timing and fuel can be an issue.
While maybe the folks you talked to settled for close enough, the ones I've talked with generally go for Correct. So yes, there are always differences of opinions.
Fact is 35 gm/sec at 2,000, will want to be one AFR, and 35 gm/sec at 3,500 is going to be something else, and the LV8 scalers don't allow for areas of reversion, and correcting for it.
Fact not opinion or I heard it from someone on another list.
Trending Topics
I'm not going to argue this with you, it has been done to death. FACT: MAF is more forgiving and easier to get running.
FACT: S/D requires more time and dedication to get going.
And forget the "high" RPM's TPI won't support it.
Plenty of people have gotten MAF based 383's working just fine and proved that "resolution" doesn't play as big a part as we're led to believe.
Just because you "think" MAf is beyond you or are switching to a larger/more powerful engine isn't reason to switch systems. Like I said, I have both S/D and MAF, for me MAF is a ton easier to tune and understand, not to mention less dependent on the other sensors.

Eric, I just did the same thing you want to do. I changed my '87 Z28 LB9 to S/D in preparation for the new 383. I am practicing the PROM burning on the 305 to help out later.
I can tell you that you are gonna catch a lot of flak from the die hard MAF guys, so be ready for that. In my little thread about this same thing, a couple of guys all but called me a dumbass, but in the end it boils down to what YOU want to accomplish.
My MAF to S/D swap went off without a hitch, by the way, except for one minor thing I overlooked (forgot to disconnect the cold start injector).
It felt really good when it fired right off and ran. I'll be posting my progress on my thread later on tonight. Just keep your chin up and take your time with it. This swap is something that it doesn't pay to be in a hurry on.........

I can support what I've said with facts, and you continue with opinions.
If resolution isn't important, then GM could have quit with the 8D code, back in the 80s. I guess they're wrong too.
BTW, I'm not arguing, I've just stated facts.
I've also left some openings to be corrected, for anyone that's really pro MAF to discuss, but it seems that the most of MAF guys seem to like the easy way, so they really haven't prefected things any more so then they were at 2 years ago.
MAF CAN have it's advantages, but it's not for the reasons, often quoted.
