Where to go to get chips

I apologize in advance to the admins if im breaking the rules on this thread, but I have no Idea where to go to get a custom chip made. I am to understand that I will need one with the mods I am doing. I am not begging for a prom, I just need to know where to start looking.. (done professionally)

used laptop with windows 98, adapter to 12 volt cig lighter, aldl free on forum, tunercat, chip burner at xtronics or used (ebay) pocket programer 2, 7747 ECU junkyard(may need to be adapted to your harness) and 28pin installed maybe a ZIF(moates), spare chips or contact moates for eeprom. ask a lot of Q's. go for it...

Are you running TPI or TBI? What year?

If you can answer those questions I'll hammer out a parts list for you. I had the same questions when I first started and it took me longer because I didn't want to ask a newbie question.

Is your car running right now? You'll have a much easier learning curve if you can data log and tune on a stock-ish system before diving head on into a custom tune. My ride is a daily driver and I burn about one chip a day trying to improve on the one from the previous day, be ready to burn quite a few chips a day if you're going from scratch without any prior tuning experience.

I'm not trying to scare you off, just let you know what's ahead.

If anyone else wants to throw their $.02 in on what I've stated, feel free, my flame suit is already on.

I have an 87 IROC Z, 5.7L 350, TPI (maf not speed density)..etc.. etc.. I am in a slight rush because I need my car to work. I am walking ten miles to work every day, and need a vehicle. I don't really have time to learn and burn, yet the cam and mods I will have will not work right without a custom chip...

So.. lay it on me... what parts am I going to need if I am going to do it..

i thought i gave a list? add chips from jameco. i have a speed density so your tune is a mystery to me. i have been reading the tpi posts seems like greek. i too modified car (all at once)and simply would not run without tune. fortunatly i have a truck as a spare. there are some tuners out there that will do for a fee and cheap. Jet i think is $400+. Turbo C is most likely same. there is another persons name(not biz) that was posted that does it for a lot less. cant think of it though. check prior posts. was given a thumbs up.

Craig is dead on with that one. I've got one of his AutoProms and it's awesome. Add a GP1 package [one of his adapters with a ZIF socket and some chips] and you're all set.

Or, go a little bit cheaper route and put it all together yourself.

-1x GP1 package [$55] - available at www.Moates.net
-Pocket Programmer 2
-ALDL>serial cable*

That's all you need other then a decent laptop. Either way, I recommend TunerPro as the software to use. I've only been tuning for a few weeks and I like the software, not to mention it's free

*schematics are available to make your own, or some companies make them. I have one that I bought for $50 shipped that I'll part with for $40 shipped OBO.

I don't mean to hi jack your thread, but I am wanting to learn how to burn prom's also, the only difference is its on 4th gen cars, and one car is speed density. I talked to a guy on the CZ28.com board who is going to give me some info, but they don't have a prom board over there like we do here. They use tunercat and LT1edit, are they completely different from what you guys use on the 3rd gen's? I didn't know since I am going to be working on their 4th gens if I should start here or not.

Thanks.
Jason

I'm pretty sure that more then a few people here use TunerCat. I am not one of them, but I'm almost positive that TRAXION uses it.

I'm pretty sure that you'd need a new .tdf from TunerCat and if it's a '95 F-body, it'll probably have the OBD2 connector. I believe there are adapters out there to convert it to OBDI so you could use a standard cable.
