'870 to '165 swap ?? and Prominator help

I am thinking about doing this swap. If a get a '165 that cam out of a car with a 350 will it have problem since I have a 305? I will probably send it off to have the Prominator installed in it before installing it into the car. This will probably be done before the new heads and cam get installed. For the guys that have done this swap, how long did it take and were did you get the new sensors and how much did they cost.

Definitely worth reading, if you haven't seen it already.

As far as the '165 memcal goes, as long as it came from a V8, it's fine. The bin you'll be burning onto the EPROM is what distinguishes a 305 from a 350.

If I have the Prominator installed on the new ECM what would I have to do before starting the car? Would the car run once I installed it or would I have to do any programming first?

You'd have to load the Prominator with an engine calibration (usually referred to as a "bin", since they're normally in binary file format).

Based on the mod list in your sig, a stock bin should be just fine to get you going. An '86-'88 bin, will work as-is. If you want to use an '89 bin, at a minimum you will need to disable VATS, which is a very simple task.

I'm sure there's already been a few posts written debating the merits of $6E (i.e. '89 code) vs. $32B ('86-'88). Might want to search the archives a little, to make your choice.

Since I have an '85 will I have to change the MAF sensor since it is different than all the other years?
