I got the privelage of looking through a hypercrap the other day in a 4.3 truck. I learned so much from their expert tuning strategies....... All they did was add 4 deg of timing in the 3200rpm 90 and 100 map blocks, thats it everything else was stock.

a couple of years ago I purchased a used ECM with stock chip and a hypertech for my car. The one good thing I got out of the hypertech was that the prom was soldered so I just popped it out and installed a ZIF socket in it's place. Now changing proms is all of 2 seconds to do.

BTW, the Hypertech gave me .15-.2 ET faster then stock but .15-.2 slower than stock ARAP.

1 more BTW....they changed a few more things than just 4 degrees advance in the 89 MAF 5.7 chip.

But yeah, I agree overall you can do alot more on your own for less money

There's a few people doing that. They pop in long enough to learn enough to be gurus, and start offering chips by phone. Not to be confused with a few, that do it for trying to learn something, and break even on the beer costs.

You can easily charge $300 if you tell em to change thermostats, and you change the fan temps..

I second hypertech is junk, people are more amzed when i go want to see? I can prove it! :-)

They turn the fans on at a way too cold temp and throw in useless timing in the 90-100 kpa regions and call it a day :-)

Seen it on all SD f body variants, stick /auto/305/350 , pretty pathetic...................

I also secondly second charging for chip burning/tuning :-)

U owe me for the chip, ZIF if needed and the adapter(if needed) and a burger/fry combo from my local haunt :-)

I wont be rich but ill die young enuff too never grow up :-)

Since I destroyed my stock memcal removing my stock chip (the chip made it out fine), I actually wouldn't mind having one just to have an intact memcal. I wouldn't pay more than $20 for it, though. :-D

I only thank Heaven above that you guys don't charge for help. I'd have been in a world of crap if that were the case.
The only person I'd ever charge for a tune/chip burn is my dumbass sister in law with the neon lights on her Z71...and only then because I know that she's cheap enough that she wouldn't pay me and then I wouldn't have to do it.

This is an interesting thread, but it may tempt too many people to do just what Grumpy was talking about...start offering chips for $$$. Then we'll all end up fighting someone else who wants to "copyright" or "patent" the entire process.
Let's don't have that. I like doing this for myself for only the cost of equipment and chips. I believe that when something like this is kept in the public forum, it will be much better for all involved.

Same here..

Although the first/last/only time I've done a chip for someone else (family friend with a '165 firebird and lots of aftermarket stuff incl. heads/cam) i never remembered to tell him what the moates adapter/29c256/tunercat def cost me so i ate that cost. not that I did a whole lot, only had about an hour but at least got the injector constant close (he didn't know what injectors were in it); and half that time was figuring out how to get the .bin into the right half of the 29c256 memory space.

go figure. getting rich quick, i am!

I have not posted in a while, but I thought I would chime in. This DYI Prom is a powerful forum. It has help to make the 730 my family's alternative to the carb. My dad, brother and I have modded batchfire systems running in our cars. Why? because once you understand how it works it is almost easier than changing jets. Many EFI places charge insane amounts, but then again many mechanics will charge you a good sum of money to tune your carb also. The only luming problem I see is, what was stated earlier "an individual hordingthe technology and making illegal or difficult for others to use. Can you say LS1edit or LT1edit.

Another thing I see alot of people selling and doing,,, is burning chips that supposedly fixs a problem. Chances are if the chip in the car functioned correctly at one point and time, it isn't the chip that needs changed. Always check the mechanical stuff.

On a side note listen to this Grumpy fellow. He helped me get started along time ago when I fuel injected my fathers vette. He knows his stuff.
