730 memcal socket problems
i have my 730 ecm on the floor of my car now since i am trying to tune my chip. when i drive around i get random check engine lights and it is like the chip isn't lodged in the ecm correclty. i have the cover on the ecm with some foam on the cover to help hold the memcal in place. with the cover securely tightened down i still get this problem. now all i do to temp. fix it is tap the top of the ecm cover. i am worried it is going to do this sort of thing wheni put the ecm back up under the dash adn i wont be able to just tap it and it will go away.. anyone else have this problem. btw i have a zif socket soldered right onto the memcal good connections though tested and everything. anyone have any ideas why this does this and if you have had this problem how do you fix it???

I agree with both replies. I wouldn't want to even guess the number of ecm's I have replaced that failed the "tap test" (or the heat up a few degrees test!)
The memcal adapters that moates sells are awesome, and relatively inexpensive!
Or you could always get a Prominator, or an Autoprom!!!!

Yeah I agree to with the tap test. When I first converted to MAP I bought a ECM off EBAY. The SES light kept flashing and relays where clicking etc...
What a headache checked all my wiring over like 2 times. Then I eneded up pulling the ECM out of its case and starting flexing it a little and it stopped flashing. Let go and it flashed again. Got another ECM and all was fine.

well this is my 3rd ecm. one was bad and the other two were brand new from autozone with i know are remanufactured but still. anyway i think i am going to look into the memcal adapter. now can you put the cover back on and install the ecm back up into the dash with the adapter in or how does it work.

loose and/or ill fitting chips will do the same thing :-)
memcals are a pia to solder, i redid mine once lol never a problem since...
try taking all your chips and slightly spreadingnthe pins out so they fit tightly as well....this is real common on the low pro zif sockets from what i can tell ... also make sure u have a chip installer tool as well, tends to keep everything tighter longert

my ZIF was installed in socket about 2 weeks ago. push fit in existing socket. drove car about 10 times when i got CE light and went limp. i was able to pull into a side street and assumed it was the ZIF of fitment. pulled the prom, inspected and back in. car ran fine and no reoccurance.

i assume you are refering to those that do NOT have a ZIF. yes the radio shack product is excellent for removal and install. i boogered up some eproms BAD when i first started. all thumbs and poor vision. the insertion devise made all the diff.

730 memcal socket problems
i think i figured out my problem... my memcal with the soldered in ziff socket wouldn't latch correctly on the left side because the plastic latch piece that comes out of the ecm wouldn't hook over the top of the memcal like it does on the right side (still stock)the ziff gets in the way. i took out the memcal and noticed the latch piece has a bevel on the bottem that will kick the memcal out when you push it down like a dimm memory socket in a computer. since it wasn't latched correctly it was kicking the memcal out just enough to cause the ecm to go into limp mode. so i pulled the stupid latch out and plugged it back in and all seems to be well.
