TunerPRO Datalog and Emulating problem

First off, thanks for taking the time to look at my thread and provide any guidance/feedback.

I just got my Romulator today and I am getting it to work with TunerproRT just fine. Meaning I can get it to Emulate with the Romulator.

The question I have is that when I'm emulating I cannot get the TunerProRT to datalog at the same time. I only have one male end serial port on my laptop for use with the Romulator.

When I disable the Emulation on TunerProRT I cannot get it to connect to the ECM for datalogging.

Isn't TunerproRT designed to allow you to datalog and emulate at the same time so that you can see what the changes are when you make a change to the .bin and send it to the romulator?

I can get the datalog feature to work with my AKM cable but I have to disconnect the Romulator to connect it since I only have one male end serial port.

Am I going to have to hook up 2 laptops just so I can see the changes I make while emulating?

Or am I seriously missing something?

Thanks,

Brian P

Brian -

TunerPro can simultaneously datalog and emulate under these conditions:

1) You have two serial ports and both your ALDL cable and Emulator are serial
2) You have a serial port and a USB port and your emulator is serial and ALDL Cable is USB (see www.moates.net), or your emulator is USB and your ALDL cable is serial.
3) you are using an AutoProm, which has built in emulation and ALDL datalogging together in hardware.

Hope that clarifies!

Mark,

Thanks for clarifying. I was surprised when I could not do both.

The laptop I am using does not have a USB port but does have what I assume to be a female serial port and a male end serial port.

Since the Romulator has the ability to operate on COM port 2 If I were to get a double female ended serial port cable I would be able to use both features simultaneously?? (AKM cable in COM 1 and Romulator in COM 2)

If the second is in fact a serial port. I'd be willing to bet its a VGA output, though.

Make sure the port in question is 9 pins.

Yup,

It's a VGA output plug. Back to the drawing board.

Since I'm using an older IBM Thinkpad 310ED 166mHz with only 1 serial port, 1 parallel port and no USB ports I'm at a loss. I use the AKM cable and the Romulator, therefore there are 2 serial cables and only 1 serial port. Okay, what to do if you find yourself in my boat?

So far I have come up with a viable alternative:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&sku=I136-1088

Now, most of us using the Moates s/w for a while have in fact, older, slower laptops so the chances of us having USB ports are few and far between.
This bad boy will install a valid COM port for use with another female end serial cable.

i hope this helps those who find themselves in similar predicaments. It is not to say that the Romulator alone does not save time, but being able to datalog and emulate at the same time without having to switch cables in between is priceless.

thats a viable option (a PCMCIA serial or USB card). the only other option for one-port-wonders is an AutoProm, which can emulate and datalog from a single port simulataneously.

hmmmm interesting, and its only another $20 over the radio shack serial to usb adapter that I just bought this week :-)

Always get it for another extensio/add on device though...

Now I can say I know what a IDE is when people talk about them

I wished I would've known Craig was going to do this AutoProm 3 years ago. I'm already $149.95 into it with the Pocket Programmer 2 so to keep immediate out of pocket costs down I went with the Romulator without knowing I would run into this problem.

I will say that AutoProm is the way to go for anyone just now getting into this.

Mark,

Do you suggest any order of COM ports for datalogging and emulating. I.E. put Romulator on Com 3/4 or whatever port the PCMCIA serial adapter creates and the datalog on COM 1? Or will TunerPro search all available COM ports looking for Romulator and ALDL link?

Thanks,

Brian P

Doesn't matter which ports you use. TunerPro will autodetect the Romulator, and you will specify which port to use for ALDL, so you're good with whatever ports you choose.

I used 1 serial port and 1 PCMCIA/serial card in my old 75Mhz pentium for a couple years.
Worked fine till I got brake checked and had forgot to hook the seat belt around the old lap top.
Only loss was the dongle cable as it hit the floor board.

Now I use a 366 with 1 serial and 1 usb/serial.
Had to disable the ir ports so it would open up ports 1-4.

Hahaha. Just for sh*ts and giggles I did a search on ebay to see how they were selling. Xtronics had a PP2 up there for 149.95 and it didn't sell on a 7-day auction. I was like well, there you have it. Might as well keep it since it is very lightly used and I'll never get a decent return on it.

Just wanted to follow up on this. Do not use the PCMCIA serial adapter I have provided the link for. It does not work with the Romulator or TunerPro RT or _ANY_ Datalogging software.

I have heard however that the Socket Brand PCMCIA serial adapters work well.

FWIW, I decided to use my other laptop which has the USB and serial port as well.
I have found annother USB to serial adapter which is cheaper thann the Radioshack adapter that works with both the Romulator and TunerPRO RT...it is the Belkin USB to serial PDA Adapter. I bought it for $28.00 at the local Base Exchange.

HTH,

You can buy that same adapter for $20 at Comp USA. There is also the USB PCMCIA Card. Unfortunately they run around $50....

Resourceful, however it wasn't anymore cost efficient for the effort.

15.99 + shipping so say $20 for the USB adapter and $40 for the USB->serial adapter (personally I didn't like the PCMCIA to USB, then USB to serial, seemed like too many conversions) so $60.

I sold the IBM Thinkpad locally for $100, found the Belkin USB adapter tax free on-base for $28, and purchased a new Dell 3800 laptop battery for my other laptop at $78. My total setback was $6.00...not too bad. Thank *** I had another laptop handy.

I'd still say for anyone getting into this, buy Craig's AutoProm, it's quality and is headache free for the one-port wonder laptop.
