knock retard
Hey guys. My '87 is getting about 5 Degrees of knock retard upon opening up the throttle all the way. I don't see it anywhere else but when I mash the throttle...Any ideas. Also the O2mv are at 940mv at WOT and the AFR is 12.4. Does this mean it's rich??? It seemed to run better at about 880mv or so before I upgraded my 32 bin to the 6E bin.
Using tunerpro I have the PE spark advance set to 1.05 from 1200-4800 rpm. At the 4000/192 spot I am running 27D,4400 26D, and at the 4400-4800/208 spot 28D and 30D respectively.
I'm running the 165ecm and the Arap 6E bin. I've taken some timing out and have not messed around with the PE very much if at all.
Thanks,
Chris

You may want to check the PE SA added, 10 degrees in one range of RPM.
Did you zero out the ALDL SA adder value? If the 10K resistor is in place this SA is added.
Else back down the SA until it stops knocking.
RBob.

I'm not sure what the aldl SA adder is, but there is not a 10k in place across A and B when the car is running. It's there upon startup to get the data going and then removed.
In the PE vs. SA there is 1.05D in the 4 cells from 1200rpm to 4800rpm. There was 9.05D in the 3200rpm cell but that was reduced to 1.05D a while back...
So you are saying that the SA in the SA vs. RPM table should be reduced????Why am I not seeing knock retard then anywhere else. It's only when the throttle is mashed down. Once it's passed that initial jump in rpm, and while the throttle is held open during acceleration, there is no more knock retard. It's only for that first second or two that I see it....

May not be able to get rid of it without going to a higher octane fuel.
Then again what is the AFR doing for that instant. It may be going lean which will also contribute to the problem. Will need a WB to see that.
Or it may be that the SA isn't being tapered out fast enough. In the LV8 vs RPM table how fast does the SA taper out to the high LV8 side.
Is the transmission downshifting too?

Do you know if the ARAP 6E has this burst knock retard so I don't keep trying to fix something that might not be broken???
Above is my SA table. It's the only one that corresponds to the LV8 vs. RPM that I can see. At 3000-3200 rpm 7D of retard, 3200-3500 about 2D of retard. I keep taking timing out, but the knock retard still remains. The car is not downshifting. This is when manually held in gear and opened up. I only run 92 octane or higher and there should not be any problem with 9.75:1 or less compression. Also running the T/F 23degree heads. At these two points there is 23-25 degree SA with reference to TDC using tunerpro.

This is the PE vs. RPM table. I have not messed with this one too much. If the plugs are pulled they look somewhat rich. The O2 counts at WOT are 920-960mv and the afr at WOT is 12.44. When the gas is mashed the AFR goes to 11.8 for a brief second and then upto 12.44 where it stays until gas is let off. One wire O2 sensor and using the graph in tunerpro this is the data I see. Still looks to rich to me. Cruise mode and idle BL's are 126-132.

If you are using tunerpro then this should help. Download his version of 6E and remember to thank Cobra289.

Thanks for the info, but I am not running with the 10k in place so there is no 8D added to the SA table.

I don't see any burst knock retard function in the $6E code. Do the plugs any any signs of detonation? Pepper flakes? It may not be true knock. Can you hear any knock.
Another item is the forced knock test. Is it enabled?

I am not sure where to find the forced knock test. No visible or audible signs of detonation. Plugs are 75% on the dark side.
Should I try removing some fuel from the PE vs. RPM table. See previous post......

I have not gotten into code yet, but what in the table you provided needs to modified??
2. what tools do I need to modify that table or line code??

Use either a hex editor or a bin editor. May need to add that location to the TDF/ECU file.
