emulator or eraser and chip burner???

New to diy prom but have but have 25 years building motors and tuning. Right now I have no Efi tuning electronics . I have a 87 and 89 chevy 1500 ( TBI) and a 233 laptop. Would I better off buying a chip burner and eraser or going with the emulator so I can adjust things on the fly. It seems to me that I possibly would learn how to tune more throughly and in a more complete manner if I were to take a set of data points ,check them out ,burn a chip and check the results. The thing is, I would like to spend my money to get the best bang for the buck and not have to buy everything twice, Also,I don't plan to get in this and lose interest later on. Thanks for any help or advise.

Autoprom if you only want to buy once.
Burn1 w/cables is cheaper but no emulation.

Start with the stickies at the top.
Also there is an incomplete update to the prom intro. Can't remember the search phrase for it though.
I'm using a 266 lap top. Just takes forever for 98 to boot.
