Cam choice for TBI motor (progress report)

Hi, I'm a new poster, been reading along for a few weeks and decided to join up. I hope I can contribute as i become more familiar with how this stuff works.. I like that there are some here who still contribute tech to help others learn. Ive seen it first hand in the 4x4 world where things went from fun where everyone helps everone to get ahead to now with competition level 'sport' where secrets are kept... I hope to help when I eventurally learn this stuff.. (I have a day job im happy with)

About me: (sorry if its long)
I have a BS in computer engineering I got about 10 years ago. And im now employed doing other IT related stuff.. But with the time since college im amazed how much is actually coming back to me... My senior project was to wire wrap a MC68000 and add a serial interface and write our own code and debug/assemble/burn it etc. to make this thing input some basic data bits set from some external dips and fill up a memory chip and do some basic math functions... we would read the a bus to see out output on a digi-scope.. blah blah but its slowly coming back with the reading about 6800 controlers in the GM ECMs...

Ok my current delema... I'm into jeeps (please dont shoot me) but very interested in this facit of engine controls... There seems to be knowledgable peope here... Anyway, Im sick of my carb. as its limiting what i can do offroad w/ angles/hills etc. I just got a complete doner motor 1990 305 TBI, 8746 ECU 'ANTT' chip (is this the mask?) and am planning out a swap to the jeep for later in the year. Its complete with full harness computer etc.. so i do have some work to get it ready..

I've researched the newest lastest greatest prom burning/emulating run on the fly stuff and its come along way since i last looked at this stuff.. Ill be researchign that some more and purchasign a kit in the near future..

Ive read well past my point of saturation and while im fortunate to understand much of the underling concepts im loosing the how/why of certain items and how they relate..

Beyond the hello, my only real quesion at this point is:

I have a very nice running low milage 1970 307 chevy and I really hate to part with it... Will the stock carb. cam work 'ok' enough to get me going until i can get up and running with my own re-burning ? Or should I swap in a 305 TBI type cam ? (or other cam? ) I'm not against spending money if needed... or possibly probraming it immediatly, i just need a little direction..

Also if there is anyone within 3-4 hrs of Raleigh, NC who does there own burning/tuning, i'd like to offer some work/labor in trade to watch you make a few modifications and get a beter feel for everything... Hell, I'll do yard work if needed I can offer basic welding, plasma etc.. and I have proper tools to set up gears and bend tubes (note: I do NOT do work on the side please don't ask)

Thanks,
-Mike Yager

It is the same cam you will find in a TBI 350. It is also the same cam that is in my 312 right now. The stock 305 ECM should run the 307 well enough to get you around, while you tweak on it.

I would sell the tbi and get a carb setup.the tbi is a really poor made system kind a like a digital carb.you are into off road stuff so you need tq i wuold sell that tbi get cash and build on what you got.As far as cams go just make sure you degree it and you want more lift than duration for off road trucks.you should do fine look up crane cams on the net.they will give a free catalog with all cam info you need probaly a lot more useful stuff.

You honestly don't know much about GM TBI do you? The TBI is great for OFF-ROAD, in fact better. It will run perfect on any angle, has better response, more low-end torque, better mileage, etc. I can beat a carbs power anyday with TBI and go farther on the same tank.

Thanks for the advice so far, I won't comment on the carb comments.. Reusing the cam will save me a few hours work.

Again, thanks and please excuse my newbie-ness to EFI....

I'm still reading and searching, old posts and threads... Ive already emailed Moates to get more info.

attached - pic of my heep...

thanks

progress report

got my autoprom today, nice kit, super fast shipping from moates.net

been looking at other peoples bins to get aclimated to the software etc..

So my first step was to figure out the chip off sets that only took me 2 hours, but i think i got it now...

Copied my OEM chip, compared it to one i downloaded, then burned it to one of my eeproms...

I'm tired but happy im making some progress... Thanks for being a helpful forum, ive been able to muddle my way from reading past questions/answers from others... and reading documentation... I need to start choping up my harness...
