Ford throttle body

Hey guys,

I'm thinking of going with a ford monoblade throttle body on my new setup. I know a few of you have used ford TB's on your custom setups.

I figure the TPS has to be pretty much the same.. Iac i'm concerned about.

Anyone wanna share any tips, tricks, or general information on using a ford throttle body (think mustang, crown vic, etc) with a '730 / '749 ?

Joe,
The TPS should be fine, three wires in both cases; but I am sure you already know that.

I do not know for certain about the use of the TB itself (never used one), but I am sure it would work fine. However, I will say this - the Holley C950 manual discusses the possible need to adjust AE Correction vs. TPS % when using large single blade TB such as a 5.0L Ford. They permit more air to enter when first opened and you may need to add more fuel to compensate accordingly. I would think the GM code would require a similar adjustment.

I would definitely be concerned about using the Ford style IAC. It is a two wire bypass style IAC.

It was a problem when I converted my Pro-Flo to the Holley C950 engine management system (See my conversion here). The C950 will only operate with stepper style IACs (GM & Chrysler), so the Ford style was a problem. Well, they make adapters and you can use the bolt on Chrysler style like Holley uses, which are similar to some GM styles (I think).

The adapter, gasket and IAC are available from Holley, but you need to call and ask for them, they are not in the catalog. About $125 for all three when I bought them a few weeks ago from Holley. You can also get the same deal from FAST and Grumpy posted something on IACs a few months ago: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...readid=303268.

The use of the C950 and the Chrysler IAC has improved my idle over the Pro-Flo like you would not believe. It idles great and there is no more exhaust smell. The Pro-Flo had to idle so rich to run, but now it is leaner, runs better and idle the best it ever has, and my cam is 234/238 @ .050 on 112 lsa.

Good luck, Ed

Hrmm.. It might end up being a better solution to just use one of the LS1 throttle bodies I have lying around. Plus I have both TPI and vortec TB cables that work with them, and I know the IAC and TPS work great with the '730/'749.

I need a few links to those guys that make the custom 100+ degree adapters.

I think the Ford IAC you mention is a PWM controlled unit.

From the megasquirt web site: http://www.msefi.com/msinfo/ms2/

Note: Beginning in 1985, Ford multi-port EFI uses an Idle Air Control (IAC) valve, which allows air to bypass the throttle plates. Unlike the stepper motors used by GM and Chrysler, the Ford units only have two terminals and one winding. These units regulate IAC plunger position using pulse width modulation (PWM). The idle speed is controlled by applying varying duty cycle percentages.

I thought you just cut a little wedge out and re weld it?
Wilson & Accufab make some. I think they are 90's though.

Could always use an GN external IAC.

I spoke with them last night. THey only make them for ford monoblade.

Issue is, LS1 throttle bodies are cheap, hell I have a few myself. I can bore it to 90MM and put new throttle plates in, in under an hour.

TO run the ford unit, you need to deal with IAC as i've read. Extra expenses that doesn't make much sense.

sounds like you'll have to build one then. you can use tight radius mandrel bend, and a couple of flanges. Comes down to how much time you want to spend, vs, how much money you want to spend. Which is always the case with going fast.

you could use steel or stainless steel too, rather than aluminum, and it would be easier to weld if you don't have a tig.

is it possible to build a flange adaapter from the ford monoblade flange to the LS flange? I've never seen em both, so I dunno how different the bolt patterns are. Some countersunk bolts might do the trick though. you'd be able to use the accufab part, and the adapter. you could even make the adapter change angle to, if you're good with a milling machine, it doesn't have to be a flat plate.

or if you wanted, you could build the whole thing out of sheetmetal, 4 sided, and then you could build any shape you want.

I was looking to try one of these some time ago. Where can they be found cheaply? All the ones on Ebay were expensive.

Thanks,
J

Memory light bulb glowing dimly...
I think Lingenfelter was where I saw a twin adapter. So maybe Accel has it now...
And I believe the one 90 I've seen modded for clearance was machined on an angle at the base .

I too would like to know where cheap LS1 TB's are....

I went with a 4bbl holley unit (1,000cfm).

As far as LS1 TB's, i've had a few given to me. Have some vortec bodies as well. I see them on ebay sometimes cheap.
