What 350 chip from GM will work?
Thanks for reading my post.
My car is an 86 that came with a 305 TPI. I now have a 350 in it with bigger injectors. Is there a GM chip for a later year 350 (87 -89 Z-28) that I can buy? I'm talking about taking the chip out of the GM box and plugging it in my computer. I feel pretty sure if I had a 87 305, I could buy the 1987 350 chip and it would work. I'm not sure about crossing years though.
Ugh - I can't believe I'm "the roc".

Why not apply that money toward being able to do your own, and have the perfect chip, rather then some generic kinda runs.

roc,
I'd buy a 87 350 chip if you want it to work out of the box....how good it runs depends on how close to stock you are. I think an 88 has VATS but I could be mistaken. So 87 is probably your only choice. Or you could try a 86 Vette chip. If your 350 has aluminum heads, I'd definitely go that route.
FWIW, I used a 86 ADS Superchip in my IROC for a year or so with no probs. When I put my large cam in though, I started having driveability issues due to the car running super-rich.
I do agree with Grumpy though...but I don't know how you could justify(esp. if you need a chip now) spending 3-400 bucks on chip burning stuff when a stock chip costs 35 or so from Vandevere Olds or SDPC or whoever. It would be easy though if you wanted to really get into it though. Buy tunercat and get the ARAP code. Disable VATS and plug it in.
It's all a matter of money.
Good Luck,

Greg, I do have a bigger than stock cam (XE262) and the idle is pretty rich with the 305 chip. Judging by post searches, that’s pretty common. I’m hoping the stock 350 chip set for the 22# injectors will clean it up a little better than the 305 chip set for 19# injectors.
Grumpy, I hate to throw away $35 - $40,,but Greg nailed my thinkning,, that’s just a drop in the bucket compared to a custom chip or the equipment to burn my own. Although at a later time I will get one or the other.
It looks like the VAT was an option for the 88 Z28s. I’ve got 3.23’s (GU5),, so I could go with #16083286 for the 88 - 5.7 with the 3.27 w/o VATs. I do have aluminum heads. If the 86 Vette EPROM would “plug in” I’ve heard they have a more aggressive fuel and timing curve, and the fans come on sooner. Just the fan (my 86 only has one) kicking on sooner would sell me. However, this sparks a few questions.
1) is the 86 Vette VAT free? (know any good Vette links)
2) Will the dual fans for both the 86 Vette or 88 Z28 verses the single fan on the 86 Z be a problem,, is the 2nd fan ECM controlled?
3) If either EPROM would work,, which would be best in your opinion. The 86 Vette or the 88 Z with 2 years of “updates”?
I'm pretty new to the fuel injection world, but I'm learning with everyone's help. Thanks again fellows!

roc,
The 350 chip isn't going to clean up your rich idle. Although you need a chip for a 350 I would advocate buying your own equipment and doing it yourself. It does not take $300-$400. It only takes...
I-PP1 The pocket programmer with the latest software on
3&1/2" floppies, manual, and wall adapter. $129.95
I-Erase4 4 chip UV EPROM eraser with adjustable timer -- turns off unit at end of erase time. $54.95
from Xtronics. That's all you need along with a free version of TunerCat that you can download from their site. Plus, somebody could probably send you a TDF file for your ECM so that you can use TunerCat with your car during your evaluation period. That equates to $185 + shipping + time to learn.

I don't know what "the roc" did, but I bought the 1988 350 computer chip from GM ($38.65) a couple weeks ago and it is working great for me - even with the Ford 24# injectors,, and even with the 218/228 - 110 spread cam!! In fact the idle is near perfect, and I just could not imagine it running any better at part or WOT than it is with the 350 chip from GM. So,, thanks for this question "roc" and thanks for the replies fellows - so roc,, if you haven't bought one already,, the 88 350 chip should work for you also.

There is nothing like a perfect chip.
The difference between works OK, and properly is monumential.
To say it isn't just means you haven't had a taste of perfection yet.
Granted I've been doing this for years now, but even after all I've tried, I'm still finding new stuff that makes things even sweeter.
Once you start getting *into it* you start raising your standard as to what good really is.
