Accel DFI Timing questions.

For those of you who run DFI, Do you run with the EST disconnected? When I have the EST disconnected the computer seems to advance the timing just fine. If I connect it the car won't even turn over. Just curious as to what everyone else has done.

Thanks
Robert

My EST is connected also with the DFI. Only time it needs to be disconnected is when you're setting timing at the crank.

Ditto. Check your table, maybe you have way too much advance.

How much is to much? I have tried setting it from 2* allof the way up to 30*. It will not start and backfires through the TB. I am stumped. The setup sheet says to run the engine to 1600rpm and set the Ignition table to whatever the timing mark on the dampener is reading. I am going to try it this way today. Any suggestions?

Did you do as the others said and disconnect the EST and set the base timing at 6*? That is also how I set mine.

Then after setting the base timing, reconnect the EST and program all cells in the spark table to the same number (like 18*) and rev up the motor to about 1500 (just to make sure that the IDLESPARK won't change the timing) and verify the timing at the crank with a dial back timing light. This way you will know that what you program will be the actual advance.

Setting the base timing to 6* was the first thing I tried. No dice. A DFI tuner here in Dallas told me to try setting all values on the ignition tables to 12* and then setting the crank to the same timing. I did this and reconnected the EST, no dice. I don't have a dial back timing light just a regular one. I am stumped. I am taking my car to him next weekend so he can get everything just right. I figured I would save myself a little money by having the timing dead on before I got there.

Thanks for all of your help.

The fuel map is fine. That we got tuned alright. I was getting 21mpg with the EST disconnected. I found out what the problem was. I got my ECU from my cousin. From the part number we knew that it was a chevy ECU. We called the company he bought it from abd we found out that it is an IPU computer as well. It was designed to be used with an MSD style distributor. I will have to buy an MSD distributor(not that they are having to twist my arm on that one.)and switch a few wires around on the harness that goes inbetween my ECU and the stock engine harness. Thanks for all of your input. I appreciate it. This board rocks.
