The OTHER chips

On the CAL-PAK I notice, as I hope everyone else has, that there are two other chips. Some even have a third Chip, similar to TRAXIONs pix. I was wondering if anyone knows what the other 2 chips are used for. Limp-Home and what? I happen to have a hpyerchip cal-pak without the other chips.

Thoughts?

So you're saying that your aftermarket memcal doesn't have the other twe chips, and your car runs?!

The one at the far end is a resistor network that calibrates the backup fuel (limp-home) system. It is application specific, at least as far as the number of cylinders in the engine.

The one in the middle is a filter for the ignition system's ESC module. The 7730 uses a white circuit board attached to the memcal, which takes the place of the underhood knock sensor "filter" that was used with earlier ECMs.

While they are chips, they are just convenient packaging for resistors, they can use laser cut resistors, and when you're doing them by the million that's the way to go. On the protype memcals, there are resistors and a few dodads soldered in place. So you don't have to actually have chips in there just the right resistors.
BTW, laser cutting the resistors can make them very accurate, inlike carbon types.

One reason I was actually asking, is I had a friend give me a Cal-Pak from a 89-91 3800 Engine, I thought about pulling the Chip and making it a backup. I am not sure it would work since one of them is a limp home mode. I have this thought of playing with fire if I tried it.

I was thinking about using a '91 S-10 memcal as an "experimental" part. I'm extremely reluctant to modify the stock memcal, as I appreciate my car being able to run properly

In the GMECM archives, I remember someone telling which pins on the netres set the cylinder count. (It was probably Grumpy!) If you put the correct resistor value across these pins, it'll at least let you run, albeit without proper backup fuel capability.
