Moates software locking up??
Moates software locking up??
Anyone have problems with the software locking up. The first time I hooked it up it linked and I went for a drive. I logged one run, then on the second run I noticed it locked up at the end of the run. I still got some data, so I pulled up the .csv file and pondered for a little. Decided to go hook it up and take more data. It linked up okay, but after about 2 min. of driving I looked over and the page 4 #'s were locked up. I didn't even get a chance to log anything. Any ideas?

FWIW, try borrowing an older/other laptop... I've had problems with some of the newer hardware thats out there. When mine locked up, pressing any of the keys would unlock it and cause it to start logging again.
It's not his software locking up if it's doing what I think it is... It's actually the communication from the 165 ECM itself.
Mine does this periodically, sometimes frustratingly often, sometimes there's REALLY long stretches between times.
I've talked to Craig and others about this, it seems common & no one has an explanation yet.
I've verified it's not Craig's program by attempting to link up with other programs, re-linking with Craig's software, and just by monitoring the datastream itself and there's just nothing there after it happens. I've also experienced this with Freescan.
Usually if you shut off the ignition for about 15 seconds, leave your laptop on with Craig's software up and running, then turn the ignition back on, it will take back off right where it left off. Which also goes along with the ECM being "locked up" vs the software.

I've successfully logged data a few times over the weekend with no further lockup. This is a great scan tool and I can live with it every now and then. Especially when its free!

I also have been having lock up (no streaming data from the car/ECM) issues with Craig's software. I have not tried restarting the car while leaving the laptop connected but I have tried restarting the laptop multiple times and running the scantool (e6.exe) from dos and Win98SE but it remains locked up (not receiving streaming data from the car). So my observations support the theory that it is the car/ECM that stops communicating.
This is still an issue that can be resolved somehow as a Tech1 or Tech1a has no problems staying linked up and receiving data. Is everyone here using an AKM cable? If so, this could be a cable issue.

I just have to say thanks to Craig here since we are discussing his software. Even with a few little PITAs like this, we are very lucky to have a guy like Craig who is willing to GIVE us all his program for free. I know I have thanked you before, Craig, but thanks again.....
I was just thinking, what if a guy could get a hold of the code from a Tech1 ........

i have found that i get occasional interuptions in data sent to my laptop when running the program. all i have to do is hit a button and the program starts reading again. i just press shift since it doesnt do anything. its like the program goes to sleep and is woke up when i press a button.

I tried to use E6 today to log a no start problem I'm having but was having a lot of problems. I hit L for log and the software said that it was logging, but when I quit, the only thing in the log for 4 out of 5 runs was the header line.
I tried both abbreviated and full logging with no success. Only one run it appeared to log
Craig?

Has anybody gotten anywhere with this? I have been busy with some other mods lately and haven't been able to play with my EPROM tuning stuff. I am going to disable my power management stuff tonight and give her a whirl if the weather is good.......

Well I disabled all of my power management stuff in Windoze and in the BIOS of my laptop (Toshiba w/ Pent 75, 40 MB RAM). I thought everything was fixed at first. I was runing the car in the garage at idle and I was getting streaming data perfectly for quite a while. So I packed up and took her out for a field test. I got about a mile from my house and it stopped receiving data from the car. I tried restarting and running it from command line and from windoze but neither one worked. I am not sure, but I think it is really toast this time. I only tried it a few times since it takes my laptop about two full trips around the sun to boot up, but it would not even link up with the ECM after it stopped reading. Any ideas people??????????
Have you guys checked the actual connections? I made my own MAX233 interface and hooked it up with paper clips. If I moved the cable around with my foot the data would stop. Check to make sure all the connections are stable and that the interface is getting enough power all the time.
