5-speed vs 6-speed

I'm curious what is different on a Camaro 5-speed prom vs a Corvette 6-speed prom. So far I havent seen anything in the TunerCat TDF file, its just auto or manual. When I put in my T56 is there a setting in the prom I should change?

I was looking at this last night, and noticed with the "D" version of the $6E TDF it's looking for the manual trans bit in the wrong location. I checked with a hex editor and confirmed...don't have the loc handy but it was dead wrong.

I also pulled up the APYU bin ('89 Vette, 6-speed) and TC with the "D" TDF shows it as an automatic. Not good. Hopefully it's fixed in the current TDF version.

I think you really need to update your TDF's. $8D is up to version T and $6E is up to version T as well.

But what about my original question. Does the computer care if I have a 5-speed or a 6-speed?

Actually T is outdated now...it was also looking at the same incorrect location. TC has just released a revised TDF for $6E with the correction included.

To the original question, the '165 and '730 ECMs have no sensor input from the manual trans other than VSS so I can't see any means for the ECM to know if you're running 5 or 6 speed.

As long as it's manual, and the ECM knows it's manual, you're in good shape.

Like the others have mentioned, other than the VSS the computer won't know nor care. Of course with the different gears and stuff, it is going to throw the load values off when you accelerate, but you may not notice that. It should work just fine providing you can get the VSS to work with your 730 ecm.

FWIW the 747 has a table of ratios that allow the ecm to know by rpm and mph what gear the trans is in. Part of it controls the shift light. It has a definite affect on the IAC and commanded idle speed as you coast down. When the VSS adapter box was way off (high mph) you could watch the rpms fall down in steps as the car came to a stop.

I don't know if your ECM has this....
