Super Ram on...Miniram Gone

Out of respect to all those over the last year that have helped me with newbie tuning starting with MAF and then with SD, I finially got the guts to sell the Miniram and install a Super Ram or as Glenn calls it "A Super Duper Ram." Its ported, polished (exterior) and Extrude Honed and is totally awesome! I love my car so much now I can't stand it. All my old problems are GONE!!! Just three chips burnt so far and I tell you I could stop and put the ECM away. The motor now reacts as I expect when I tune. With the Miniram when I solved one problem I created another. I was always chasing my tail. Throttle response is very crisp and instant. Torque is awesome to say the least. I lose some top end but the extra torque makes up for it and then some.

I learned a great deal about tuning with all my challenges. I now will work hard to start giving back to the list all that I have learned and to continue leaning. This is a great list with great people. By helping people like myself, it can only get better.

Thanks again for all the support.

Congrats, that's great to hear. I'm glad you want to give back, because I've got a SR 385 in the works, and once I sell my old car ('89 RS) I'll have about enough to finish it. Congrats again and enjoy.

Jason, which parts did you send to EH, what did they do with 'em, how much did it cost, and how long did they have your parts?

Thanks!

They did the runners and Acell base. It was $580.00 (expensive I know) and it took them only 3 days since they are not busy now.

Do you have any idea on the flow difference before/after?

It definitely looks pretty Jason. Did you reconnect the EGR and have you tried experimenting with Highway Mode yet?

Might as well save some money to offset all the money you've been spending. It will be easier to explain to the wife as to why you did all of this...."Honey, it is all an experiment to get US 30 MPGs from my Vette".

Looks real nice,
might think about some intake tract refinements. ie shorter. larger diameter stuff.

Afgun, No flow numbers before and after.

Glenn, I don't have the EGR hooked up yet. I need time to just enjoy the car. hehe

Grumpy, I can't think of what to do on the intake side. I know I need to do something and eliminate the MAF butI can't figure out what. Any ideas?

Jason, how about some High Density plastic tubing, like at a Hardware/Plumbing Supply store?

Well here is the thing. Mark Romans whom some of you may know from the GMECM list, flowed a stock 89 airbox at 588 CFM and a ported MAF like mine at 750 CFM. So it seems that the airbox itself is the real restriciton. A 90 to 96 Vette airbox is much better but it won't my car. My radiator is striaght up and down and the later Vettes have a steep rake.

Not always about flow, most of it's about response to chang of flow that counts.

I have my pre turbo tract down to about 16" and it's all 4" diameter. Makes all the difference. I'm running a 60 series turbo, and it spools much faster then a stock lil one. ya, I gotta a ton of chip work in it, but relocated the MAF, and the pre T stuff have really woken things up.
And for every 1% reduction in intact resistance is 2% HP.

You can get a larger intake for the early vettes. I bought my car and it had one already installed. It uses a "ZR-1 sized" air filter that is nearly twice the size of stock. A stock filter faces upward but this one faces downward. It also draws air through a hole (that you have to cut) in the radiator shroud. This allows the filter to draw air straight from the area in front of the radiator. It is not a ram air kit. the kits are made by a few different people. I think mine came from TPIS. This intake might help you out a bit.

I might also have the perfect tube to help you swap out that accordian tube. I had a Super Ram and am just now swapping to a Mini. Anyway, I have a "power tube" It's a straight rubber tube that slips in where the accordian is now. I had to trim it to make it fit the SR with a Accel 58 mm TB and the TPIS intake I mentioned above. It's a perfect fit for this combo. I don't think it's gonna work for my new set up...especially since it looks like I'm going to convert to a 730 (required tuning content).
Email me offline if you are interested.

It probably isn't TPIS kit because when I bought one from TPIS, it came with out an attachment or fitting to use an air filter. I sent mine back and bought one like you describe above.

i believe he is talking about the breathless performance intake for the vettes with the vertical radiator. i believe SLP makes a cold air box for the vertical radiator'ed vettes too. there is also a kit that replaces the front license plate housing that is called a forced air kit for the C4. it forces air like ram air into the old license plate housing at the nose of the car.

I missed this,
get rid of the accordian stuff.
For the MAF just a piece of muffler pipe.
there are some adapter hoses, like 3 to 3.5 or 3 to 4, but they get $$$. The turbo shops carry them, and I'd imagine a large truck repair shop would have something along those lines.

Every 1% intake tract resistance drop gets you 2% HP gain. BUT, you have to balance filter size for tract resistance.

Jeff,

The miniram is sold.

Grumpy,

I thought about those hoses you mentioned. I have alot of heavy equipment and a reapair shop and I have seen that type of hose.

I'd be interested to hear the answer to this one. I'm in the same boat, with an almost identical intake setup to Jason's. I still haven't come up with an idea for what to do with the intake tract since the '730 swap.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I found this site today.

Looks like they have some nice ducting that might work.
