Interesting Observation--ADS Superchip

I bought a couple of ADS Superchips on clearance for $10 from Summit Racing just to get the memcal adaptor. While messing aroung with my new programmer I decided to download the bin from them both. One is a "Street" model and the other is a "Strip" model.

The ECM constants are the same as for my original stock chip.

Spark advance is not touched until MAP is at 95. WOT Air/Fuel ratio is tweaked a bit.

There are a few more changes, but I'm not too impressed with the mods. Sure glad I didn't pay full price.

The newer memcal I bought for my truck actually had some more significant changes in it than the ADS chips did.

BTW, why would ADS say that you need to remove your cat in order to run their "Strip" version?

Spark advance is not touched until MAP is at 95. VE is tweaked a little bit between 400 to 2000 RPM, but only for MAPs of 20 through 40 KPa. Pump Shot vs Differential TPS is reduced some until you get to 25% TPS and then it is increase a bit.

**Everone** knows you can't go racing with a converter......
Just more smoke and mirrors.
Also eliminates folks blaming them for the converter going bad.

Surprised to hear they changed that much.

Actually Grumpy. I went back and compared the ADS chips to my original AWBK bin (which was in the memcal that shipped with the truck) and the changes were a lot less. My newer bin (BDPK), from the new memcal I just bought, actually had more changes than the ADS chips. I was using the compare feature in TunerCat and was confused as to which bin (the ADS or the BDPK) actually had the changes. Turns out the BDPK was the one with the changes. When I compare the ADS chips to the AWBK (my original bin that shipped with the truck) the ADS chips barely had any changes.

Looks like they took the AWBK bin as their starting point and advanced the timing at 95 and 100 KPa and called it quits.

Now you know why Grumpy, Traxion and myself ALWAYS are telling people that these "off-the-shelf" chips like ADS, Jet, Hypertech and SLP are a COMPLETE waste of money.

As you discovered, they change VERY LITTLE (if that). A few extra degrees of spark advance at mid-rpms, a dash more fuel, lock the TC at a few higher rpm and change the fan turn on temperature (if "designed" for a 160* t-stat).

What I find even funnier, is when people that have bought these claim they "feel a definite SOTP difference and estimate .2-.3 improvement in et". I guess that is what happens when you let your butt make decisions for you.

Glad that you now see EXACTLY what we've been telling people all along.

Whats fun thou is the ones that say the too rich and too much timing chips, are quicker, and then find out the slowed down at the strip. Well, at least the word is slowly leaking out to what really works

but the adds in summit say 30 horsepower.
they wouldnt lie would they?
perhaps my money would be better spent on a 20hp K&N and a 15hp flowmaster.
thats 65hp for about $300

I think he meant 35hp (20+15=35), unless he is using the new math that most aftermarket parts companies use. If so, the 65hp figure is conservative.

I actually did get .2 out of my ADS chip...went from 15.9x to 15.7x...(no verification that it was exact same conditions from run to run between chips...it was 2 different days months apart...but I do know that 15.9 was my previous best and 14.7x was my best run that next time I went out with the new chip)...the ADS wouldn't work with my motor though after I swapped the cam in.

Of course, I am proud to say I swapped my old injectors for the chip...and am relieved I didn't spend money on it!! Of course, the memcal from the ADS Superchip is the one I'm using for my burning...so it wouldn't have been a total waste...even if I HAD spent money on it.
