Memcal question

I'm converting to a 730 ECM in my 88 vette. I need a memcal. I have the stock F-body memcal part number, but I hear the vette, and F-body memcals are different? If they are different, does anyone know what the part number for the vette memcal is. I called my dealer and they want like $80+ for it. I can get the f-body memcal on the net for $40. So I know I can get the vette one for about the same. Problem is I need the part number, and the dealer will not give it.

Thanks Bryan

Try Flow Chevrolet (www.gmpartsdirect.com). If you do not know the part number, click on "customer service", fill out the form, and they will look it up for you.

Last Memcal I ordered from them was right on $40 including the shipping (which is considerable but they will show it to you before buying).

There is a difference also between the 7730 and 7727 (Vette version). The 7730 does not support an Oil Temp Sensor, where as the 7727 does.

If you use a 7730, you should either look at running an F-body BIN or disable the Oil Temp Sensor in the Vette BIN of the Memcal. I am not sure if the latest verstion of TunerCat allows you to disable to the Oil Temp Sensor. May have to talk to them to add the various Constants to disable the Oil Temp Sensor if you want to use the 7730.

Glenn,

Let me get this right, being new and all. Are you saying the 730 ECM itself does not support the oil temp? I was under the impression that I could just put the Vette memcal in the 730 and have oil temp?

The 7730 does not have support for the Oil Temp Sensor to my knowledge. The 7727 does.

I am running a Vette memcal in the 7730 ECM. Every once in a while, I get an error code which corresponds to oil temp (high or low-can't remember).

I wired it up without having any input provisions for an oil temp wire.

Looks like I gotta find the flag for it-but it is just annoying...it doesn't kick you into limp home mode. -Matt-

Thanks for the help guys. Maybe I would be better off with the 727 ECM? I picked up this 730 cheap, so it's not a big deal. I just didn't want to get to deep into things and find out bad things. The 727 will plug up using the same connectors correct? I've never seen the two side by side. I've only ever seen the 730.

No, connectors are completely different. If you don't find a Corvette harness, get one from say a 90 Lumina. You'll have to do some tweaking here and there but nothing major. Better than shelling out big bucks for a custom made harness.

To disable the Oil Temp checking, you have to alter the instructions in the Source Code. There are two ways to do this. Both are just after address x'D152 in the 8D hac. Just find the lable LD152.

1) Change the instruction "BLS LD160" to a "BRA LD160".

2) Change instruction "BSET L0043,#$80" to "BSET L0043, #$00".

Just read the BIN with a Hex Editor (the Edit function of FILEPROM or the Windows PP version will work). Go to the address x'D152 and look for the hex sequence or either 1 or 2. With 2, you would look for "80" a few bytes after x'D152 (around x'D15B), change it to "00", save the BIN and then read it with TunerCat and re-save it to make the Check Sum correct.

I can't tell you the specific address for the bytes to change as I run the AUJP BIN and it is offset in the instruction locations.

Glenn, I thought the 7730 and the 7727 are the same with exception that one is for undere the hood and the other for under the dash. I have a pin cross refence between the 7730 and 7727. both driver circuits seem to be the same. although I have not tried it, I would think you can run the added wire and new oil sensor and use the vette memcal with no trouble.. But I honestly don't know.. on 'paper' it looks like it will work
