Trouble getting TunerPro RT to see ALDL cable

My buddy built a 2 transistor cable for me with parts he had at work and I tried to get it hooked up to my '730 ECM today but had no luck. I can't get it to recognize the cable using the "Test for valid cable using settings" button. I've tried my laptop and desktop. Both have serial ports and com1 and com2 ports are enabled. I couldn't get bios to come up on the laptop but on the desktop it had com1 set to 3F8/IRQ4 and com2 is 2F8/IRQ3. I'm going to go over his cable to make sure everything is soldered right but he knows what he's doing with this stuff so I'm relatively sure it's right.

The resistors are 5.6kOhm, by the way.

Checked out the cable, appears to be to the schematic. My friend also said he checked all the soldering under a microscope.

There's not too much to it, here. TunerPro expects that whatever gets sent out the port will be echoed back to the port since the out/in data lines are tied together on an ALDL cable.

I'd suspect that the cable is the problem. Does it require external power?

So I broke down and bought a cable from aldlcable.com but TunerPro still won't recognize it using the "test for cable" button. Any ideas? I haven't tried hooking it up to the car yet, I need to rewire the ALDL connector to match the one on the cable.

Do you have the port settings correct in TunerPro? Is your COM port enabled on your PC (check the device manager under "ports" for COM1 or COM2)? Etc.

Re: Trouble getting TunerPro RT to see ALDL cable

Ok, so I think I got TunerPro talking to the ECM. It'll detect and connect to the ECM but when I try to record a log I get nothing during playback. Also when I turn on the dashboard or monitor nothing scrolls across. Am I missing something there? I'll take some screen caps when I get a chance to post here.
