Help Please

i need help; im totally lost. my setup:
87 S10, with 350 running on 88 '165. its from a 305 but i can't remember what bin. i know that this isn't the best setup, but its all i had at the time.

heres my problem. i can't get into diagnostic mode. i've checked all my connections about 8 times, using a test light and DVM. everything seems good. wiring for the SES light is good. i jump the ALDL, and there is only a steady SES. this is driving me nuts because i keep getting the SES light on the highway, and i can't figure out whats wrong. which leads to my next issue...this damned light! it comes on at about 65mph, and goes out under 50mph. i cut and removed wiring for AIR, and canister purge, could this be my problem?

i plan to buy a moates adapter and all the other stuff so that i can get the correct 350 bin, and hopefully run better. thanks for any help that you guys might be able to provide, Jim.

Re: Help Please

I recommend getting a good & correct 350 bin in there before you start chasing the SES light / diagnostic issue.

Regarding EPROM (bin file)
You can get a good idea what your BC code you are running by taking EPROM out of ECM and reading contents with EPROM reader-writer. Once you have an image file a binary compare can be done with TP (or other program) against know good '165 bin files. You can find a list of image files for '165 on DIY EFI:
http://www.diy-efi.org/gmecm/ecm_info/1227165/

With respect to ALDL - can you data log with WinALDL or similar program? You may have bad ECM interface - which looks OK externally (i.e. connector to connector is OK, but ECM never sees I/O line being pulled low for diagnostic).

I hope this helps

Re: Help Please

thanks for the replys.

i downloaded tunerpro tonight, and started playing with APYP. it seems like everyone goes right to ARAP, but with 10.5:1 and iron heads thats not going to happen. is this a bin you would recommend me starting with?

i played around with it a little tonight, mostly changing flags and constants. tunerpro makes it seem like childs play. for the moment, i have no hardware, or laptop. im working on getting that stuff real soon. im just getting started, and this was a big step for me to start messing around.

thanks for bearing with me, Jim.

Re: Help Please

For a 305 running a manual tranny on a '165, use ANZA.

Re: Help Please

AUJM is the newest firebird 350 700R4 with 3.27 rear. It's $6E, so disconnect the cold start injector if you program that. Use this - assuming you're using an F-body wire harness, and 86-89 MAF sensor. Also, you'd have to change the injector constants to whatever injectors you're using. If you have 350 injectors already, then no need. If you get a programmer, then you really don't need to find the right chip at all - just make your own.

The speed based diagnostics could be EGR, but it's hard to say. It's a good idea to find a spare ECU, anyway, and it would help you diagnose your problem. Converting to a '730 ECU also isn't too hard, so they say, and would give you a more reliable ECU (IMO).

You could take your car to most car parts stores to get a free code scan as well, if you want to test your setup for communication.

Re: Help Please

redngold, thanks for the reply.
yes, i am using an F-Body harness. its from an 88 Z28. will it be possible to change from the magnetic VSS to optical with the firebird bin?

as for the '730, i plan on doing that in the future. i already have the ecm, and im finishing up a harness. i plan on running $59, as i hope to have a MP T-70 under the hood before too long.

Re: Help Please

I don't know much about the VSS input, sorry. You can try it and post your results! Or do some searching, I guess. I'm in the middle of a road test, and don't have time anytime soon.
