What chip to use in this situation? Engine & gearbox change
What chip to use in this situation? Engine & gearbox change
Posting this on behalf of a friend. The finishing touches are being done as we speak on his new engine and gearbox setup. He has got a 1990 IROC that has now a new 383 crate engine with HSR + 6 speed gearbox.
It needs a good tune now. The car started was a bit rough at idle most likely due to the INJ constant 24 while it has 32lbs. The guys are gonna put it on the dyno and dial it in. But my mate is not sure what chip option is best. He has ostrich and uses tunerpro..
But the question is what chip should he be using for best results?
SAUJP? That is what is currently in the car
or
Vette chip that came out in 6 speed vettes.
Is there anything majorly wrong with running a SAUJP in a manual car? The only thing that I can think of is the VSS which will have to be hooked up so the ECM knows speed.
What is the best way to go guys?
BTW engine is a 383 crate engine 500hp, alloy heads...

Re: What chip to use in this situation? Engine & gearbox change
Personal preference?
I would go with a vette bin, but IMHO I would use a TPI 305 setup speced with the appropriate changes as abetter starting point and alot safer timing table to start.
I dont like starting with scary looking timing tables like vette/firehawk/saujp all have in them. Most people who tune seriously end up having tables looking nothing like those when done(not hating on anything/one)

I myself have never looked at a vette bin and am not sure what RPM the tables go to? I know the SAUJP tables have been tweaked and go into the 6000rpm range whiich was a benefit.
Thanks for the heads up. Do you have any recommendations on what Vette bin to start with? We need it to be MAP.
Re: What chip to use in this situation? Engine & gearbox change
3.8TransAm I think you might have given good advice. I have downloaded the AXXD 5spd F-body bin and will tell my mate to use that. We will change the relevant tables and constants to match his engine and then take it from there.
I have read a few people have done the same and used the 5spd f-body bin for their 6spd set-up.
So it looks like the go, plus the advantage of it being a mild bin to start off with. Maybe once SAUJP v4 comes along might be an option to change over and just copy over the values from the AXXD bin.
