Tuning a built V6

Hey all, Coming to you guys for some advice... i'm using a '7730 ECM to run a V6 with a big cam, headers, port work etc. Been working on the tuning for a month or 2 and it was getting pretty close. then the fuel pump went out.

I replaced the pump with one for a stock 350TPI and a new filter.. then my BLM's dropped to 91

I'm using Freescan to datalog since tunerpro RT won't connect to the ALDL box.

Basically i know that i need to adjust the VE all over the place now but the oddity is the NB o2 volts when it goes into PE mode. I'm commanding a 12.3 AFR and the o2 volts are going way lean. They weren't doing this before the new pump...

BTW, i'm using #32 sy/ty injectors and a 43PSI FPR. (full mod list here: http://www.v6z24.com/registry/whitelightning2/ )

Here is a datalog: http://www.davesux.3x00.com/726chipLA1timing2.csv

thanks for any help!

Dave

Get a wideband 02, the NB is nearly useless at WOT(and idle sometimes). Your 1-2 months of tuning would have been cut in half. That alone makes it worth the money. Your trans am will also thank you. (-:

Re: Tuning a built V6

I was getting between 170-250mV at wide open no matter what I did on my brother's v6. I changed the O2 sensor, and nothing else and started getting readings in the 950-1000mV range, I think it depends on the sensor quality and especially its condition.

from experience, a wide band is invaluable when making a good tune.

Exactly as 11s says. Both Tim, myself and almost all of us old time TGOers here have ALL been there...and we ALL have learnt that on a WB O2 is really the only way to get there. You MAY get it close (especially if you use it inconjunction with other old school tricks like reading plugs), but a WB is really the only effective way to do it.

Further, with Real Time tuning & a WB will make the job even faster yet. You'll do in days what takes months...and it will be done RIGHT!

But I am so glad to hear that you are installing a WB.

Re: Tuning a built V6

Thanks!

I tuned the T/A the old school way, by smell/feel and it ran pretty good, only in the last 2 yrs got into this computer tuning.

I've been piecing together a WMS wideband unit, Should be done ASAP. I'll also be able to datalog with it through the ECM which will be a nice plus...

I might end up using it on the T/A down the road after i rebuild the engine.. probably gonna switch to EFI on it as well.

Since it's a project with no deadline it's probably gonna get a set of spooly things.. If i can only find a good aftermarket EFI Vortech manifold..

Re: Tuning a built V6

You need to really learn that six banger stuff. I think it would be great to have an expert v6 guy here on the prom board.
