Upgraded engine, will stock bin get me by?
Upgraded engine, will stock bin get me by?
Hi all,
I was wondering if someone can tell me if my stock ($8D) bin will be able to (safely) run my new motor until i can get some logging/tuning time with it.
Here's the Engine specs:
Heads: Aluminum 180cc runner, 2.02/1.60 valves
Cam: Comp "xtreme energy" TPI roller cam, 276/290 deg. adv
220/230 @ .050
.547/.547" valve lift w/1.6 ratio
Injectors are 22lb/hr and ignition is stock as well, 2200 stall converter.
Sooooo, anyone know if my stock bin will run this setup ok until I can get some tuning done on my own? Thanks in advance.

Very doubtful. Need to just start tuning it as soon as you fire it up.

Even the stock eprom on a stock engine can benefit from tuning - especially SD TPI engines (yours). While your engine should run with the stock eprom, it will be far from optimal. You will probably be short 30-40 HP from where it should be with a properly tuned.
However, an "off-the-shelf" or "mail-order" eprom will not get your those results at all.

My LT4 HOT cam engine ran eyes-burning-rich when I first started it, and I'm guessing your camshaft will run the same. You're going to need a custom chip to start it.

Thanks for all the replies. The last time I tried with another engine, it ran the "eyes burning" rich as mentioned here. I may have to play with the fuel tables a little at first, I just didn't want to until I had a few "break in" miles on the engine.

The O2 sensor does quite a bit to help correct while you are breaking it in AS LONG as you don't go WOT. Your idle will need help and you can do some datalogging & correcting while just "breaking it in".
But, WOT is where you will need the most help. Just get yourself a WB O2 sensor (which will be offset by not having to buy a custom eprom that will be a compromise at best...unless THEY are going to hook-up a WB O2 sensor for you).
