Some tuning advice / direction
hi gang, i don't post much as I hardly know anything more than whats already been said (if that). I've been muddling along with my 8746 tuning and so far its been going well.. Brief recap on where im at.. I'm running a 305 camaro TBI swapped onto my 1972 small block 307 thats sitting in my jeep. I've gotten my fuel pressure sorted out, I'm running a stock GM pump in my fuel cell and I have a steady/consistent 10.5 PSI. I've finally gotten other jeep related problems sorted out to where I can drive this thing and do some tuning..
So I collected some logs today. (attached) and they seem in line with what I was expecting to see. Which leads me to my questions..
I haven't done any new VE adjustments since getting my fuel pressure sorted out. My BLMs don't seem to far off, I'm a little rich (~110ish) across most of the lower operating range at all loads, and not so bad as RPMS come up 2800ish at higher loads...
1) I set my Injector width based on my 10.5 psi.. should I just continue to dial in the VE or twitch the BPC a bit more?
I need to re-read the VE1 and VE2 table information again.. I'm a little fuzzy on how I need to re-level them and when..
2) I only upped my AE TPS to 50% and i notice i got into it some on a few quick take offs.. Should I up it some more ? (Its turned my jeep into a slug )
3) Upon deceleration I notice some strong fuel smell. What areas do i need to play with to address that?
4) This motor still has a carb cam shaft and it feels like its asking for more timeing at certain times. I'm a little nervous about turning it up some until someone more skilled give a nod...
Any other sugestions or input ?
Thanks -mike

Here is my tuning notes log file.. Its kinda messy and some older entries are negated by more recent fuel pressure changes etc..
What other info might be helpful ?

Re: Some tuning advice / direction
The older non-swirl port heads on your 307 WILL want more timing than the swirl ports on the L03. I would start the timing out at 8* BTDC @ 100KPA from 400-1,000 rpm. I would ramp that smoothly to 32* @ 3,600 rpm @ 100 KPA. Then put in 16* of vacuum advance starting around 90KPA, ending around 60 KPA. At 2,000 rpm cruise you want about 30* of total timing, vacuum included.

thanks for your reply, i guess this is where i really show my ignorance. I've made several other tweeks and patchs with not much trouble but the timing is where i get nervous..
here is my current "Main SA vs RPM vs Load" table

let me try to cut in what you've suggested...
(again thanks)

Ok rereading your sugestions (10th time)... You mention vacume a few times... just to clearify I'm not running a vacume advance Ive swaped on a TBI intake and elec. dist..
Are your #s what i should end up with in the table or the ammount to add on ? Or is there an adder table im missing ? Im just confused as from reading the other good thread (free tune) that mention of adding in 4* seemed like a lot to some... Is it my table is just that far off ?? Let me go do some more reading...

Here is an example of what I am talking about. This was originally used with my 1980 C10 chevy with the weak 145 HP 2bbl 350, that I converted to TBI. It has a weak 7.8:1 compression 350 with weak burning "624" heads on it and the stock "929" cam in it. Bottem of the barrel, performance wise. Like the 307 you currently have, it needed alot of timing to run properly.

Re: Some tuning advice / direction
I've been plugging away at this a little bit.. Im seeing some things that don't make sense to me. Any insight appreciated..
at 400 rpm @ 80, 95, 100 kpa i got a pile of knock hits. My jeep does rattle and shake and vibrate due to the frame mounted rollcage.. This area seems like it would be only at startup.. But the counts seem very high..
The jeep idles at 600 so is that simply where the ECM is logging..
in the 600-800 @ 35,40,45 kpa cells there are several hits.. this is what i assumed would be the idle area.. (idles ~40kpa), can I tune around this somehow, or is this infact what the motor needs in this area ?
How many counts should I see before I pull timing in that area ?
Fast355: I started out with a less aggressive spark table than what you gave posted by about ~1/2 Due to my fears and never having messed with spark timing before. I did notice improvement and my confidance in tuning this has gone up some just from the reptitions..
So far I'm sticking to the pull 4 from the knocked cells then add 2 to back to everything..

Re: Some tuning advice / direction
Ok more searching, has helped solve the 400RPM / 100Kpa 'starter' knock issue.. That part definilty makes more sense after reading this thread...
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/diy-...l-startup.html
Ill go put timing back into those cells
