Vette TPI Fuel/Spark/Timing in 3rd Gen
After pondering "tunning", getting a Moates APU1 + & now selling it, people saying "don't buy mail order chips" & reading some of the stories... I finally found someone local... but he wants $450 to tune... & for what, 20 hp???
I think I"ll save my money and worry about it later with the engine swap / procharger....
The one thing I did see... the TPI vettes, because of their aluminum heads, had a more aggressive fuel / spark / timing curve.... I've seen people say, "not compatible with 3rd gen Iron Heads cuz they don't dissipate heat as fast as the aluminum, easier for detonation to occur, etc...
Has anyone tried this setup with Iron heads & higher ocatne 91 fuel, lower thermostat and lower fan temps?
I'm tempted to try, it's a stock GM program... trying to get feedback...

Yes, I have. The Corvettes have an oil temp sensor in the oil pan. The computer monitors that. Without the sensor, you will get an SES light on while you're driving around. The only way to get rid of it is with a custom prom.

The timing curve is usually aggressive enough on the F-body. I often times end up pulling spark out of the stock calibration. What happens is the engine starts to ping when the overly rich PE air/fuel ratio is leaned out. Pulling spark and getting the fueling right will make a TPI engine lean into the wind and go.

i tried the vette bin not too long after i got in to tuning, at light throttle it works ok, i got some knock counts. start leaning on the throttle a little bit, & watch the knock counts go though the roof & feel the power drop off.
i even got gutsy once & floored it, i backed off as fast as i could & went back
to tuning aujp.
the more it pings, the more timing you have to pull to get it to stop.
i was running 92 & my T-stat was stuck open.

Yes and no. The stock iron heads? nope, way to det. prone when you get the fuel mixture set right like Fast355 said. A good set of aftermarket iron heads? Possible if you're careful, but could go either way. Might get away with it using a real modern head with a fast burn chamber design they're less det. prone. So much depends on your cam, gear ratio, torque converter etc that its hard to give a definitive answer. On your stock 305? I wouldnt' do it.
