Moates G1 and a ZIF wont fit
I dont know if this question has been asked before but I have a couple of bare Moates G1 adapters and some standard 3M ZIF sockets. Up until now I have always bought his adapters complete with Aries ZIF sockets so they come completed already.
The socket on the G1 adapter has these tiny circular holes for the chip pins and the ZIF socket seems to have flat tabs instead of pins. I think this is for ease of soldering on plain boards.
We used to play with blocks and circles in kindergarten and I know the squarish tabs dont fit in the circle holes.
Do I need to machine the pins on the ZIF or do I need to enlarge the holes in the socket itself to make it work? (how would one do this?)
I only dabbled in electrical stuff before and took shop class for mechanical things.
Thanks for your help, I can take pictures if needed.

Yes, please post a pic. The Aries type snaps in tight, but I'm not sure about some other ZIF brand/styles.

Hey Craig,
I got your order fast as always.
Yeah the ZIF sockets I bought have two rows of flat tabs in parrallel all the way down. I tried to get good pictures:

I think the main difference is whether or not its for DIP (dual inline pins) these things dont have any pins, just tabs. I tried to file them down but it messed up the alignment. Now I know why they were so cheap.
The pins on the SF512 chips are pointed in a 90 degree angle compared to the slots in the ZIF whereas the 3M tabs are in the same angle as the slots.

Looks just like the pins on my ZIF sockets, that have no problem with the DIP sockets that are on my G1's.
I have noticed that the round socket DIP sockets require a tad more force than spring socket DIP sockets.
If you can fit an EEPROM into the G1, you should be able to use those ZIF sockets.

Re: Moates G1 and a ZIF wont fit
I tried to force them, believe me. I even got my file out and filed the pins down. They would seat up to a point but they were still too wide to seat correctly.
I pulled out the Aries out of the Burn1 to take a look at the pins:

Sure enough, the Aries pins are long and slender and the 3M pins are wide and it looks like they are not pins at all.
They are a flat piece of metal that was stamped to be symmetrical and folded over at a point (the point ...get it?) and squished together. Since they are pressed together it appears to be a point, but upon disassembly you can tell its two pieces conjoined at the tip. The gap in between the halves is where the DIP pins go.

That second pic is a lot better to see the difference, though using a camera with macro mode would be ideal.
It looks like you'll have to break down buy ZIF sockets you know will work.

You might be able to get it to work by using an intermediate leafspring socket, but yeah, looks like things might be a little challenging. I don't think those will fit in the machine tooled holes.

I have the same issue too. The pins are too wide. I may just go to a local electronis repair shop and have them remove the DIP and solder in the zif.

Red x pictures on this end.
If you got them from Motes they would probably be correct...

If you want, I could swap it out for something custom, just get with me via email offline.
