newbi After first burn
Hi and thanks to everyone on this sit. I would not be this far on my 91 basket case rebuild if it was not for this sit.
The car is a 91 fake Z
with a 350, dart heads, 350 350 HP Chevy cam and 10.5:1 CR
I just burnt my first chip with with my moattes burn 2 and tuner proRT. The bin is from the Hypertech chip that came with the car the mask is from Moattes site.
Never mind when I went to verify the mask it was the wrong one.
I'd still like to thank everyone and I may be back with more questions

Re: newbi After first burn
Okay,
I have more questions with tuning this thing I assembled from a pile of parts that somone else could not assemble or get to work. All My friend say get rid of the injection and put a carburaator on it but im to stubbern to do that i know I'll get it to work.
First: from what i mention above it a little hopped up 350 (compents verified by my motor builder when he freshend her up) but from what i can tell from reading the chip its a stock 305 chip placed in the hypertech socket. Where should I start on the bin file? The 305 chip in it, a stock 350 or maybe something different?
Second: The injectors, I had them cleaned and calibrated but lost the paperwork for them. I think they were 29 lb er's but I can not be sure of that. Should I take one out and have it recailed to see what it is or can I work around it? The top is light blue if that helps any.
Third:I was dataloging with tunerpro today and i was try to get the averaged curves for ve and timing is this posible or do i need winadal? What I got out of it was somthing that looked like growing crystal structurs and not a nice 3d curve. Then it may be the car running like that it sure feels that way.
Thanks
Chris Gill

Re: newbi After first burn
First step is to identify the injectors you have. that will allow you to set the BPC correctly in .bin. You can then begin datalogging with either TP-RT or winALDL and begin modifying .bin after seeing log results. Visit the sticks above as they will be of help to you. also look at TBI sticky "come in for free tune".

Can't help ou much without knowing what you have.
Is it TBI, TPI ?
ECM number ?
What mask ID? $8D (speed density, MAP) or $6E MAF
What bin did you load?

Re: newbi After first burn
It a tpi with a 730 ecm, the mask is the super_ $8D, MAP.
The bin is one of those good questions. It came with the car. my first impression is it was a hyperteck chip but from what i know of the car the guy that was trying to fix it may have not thought it was not working and changed it out with a stock 305 chip. The only clue to make me think this is that the engine size and injector size in the bin says stock 305.
Let me try to explain more about the car. It was supposed to be a autocross car from way back (lots of money spent on it) then some kid bought it and blew it up after 2 days of having it. he brought it to some butcher and he made a major mess trying to get it to run. then it sat for 7 years. so i don't know all of the component but i learn more about it every day. Oh the valve were bent and it exploded the gear drive.

The injector: I looked all over tonight I can find the paperwork when i had them cleaned. I'm just going to go with my hunch that they are 29 lb/hr

Re: newbi After first burn
Okay I have a ploy.
the stock 350 or 305 chip does not make much difference when I plug them in with the right cid and my assumed fuel flow of 29 lb/hr. so this is what I'm going to do if i can find the right screws in the bin to turn.
change temp setting to stay in open loop, 130c if i'm correct.
disable the knock sensor and do it the old fashion way and listen for the ping if i have the timing to fare advanced.
disable canister and pollution pump in bin.
watch the O2 censor voltage and pull plugs to check the mixture.
Move the fuel curve up or down by 5% to try to get the tune close.
Hope i dont get the hadron collider effect in my cylinders and cause small black hole to accure and have them consume the whole universe.
If you think I may destroy the universe please stop me now

STOP, have you read the stickies on top,
if you have please read them again
and again. GO here https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/diy-...uide-book.html

Re: newbi After first burn
Okay I'll read again.
But I'll explain what I'm trying to do. I do not know the flow rate of the injectors so i was going to try and get the O2 sensor voltage correct (mixture) at least in one spot and then look at the VE curves and try to verify if I have the right flow rate. Then I can start tuning like they do in the stickies.

Re: newbi After first burn
OK, to just "get it running" it is ok to fudge the Inj. constant.
But beware if you keep going with the wrong setting you can go in circles.
Get a copy of Datamaster 8D from the TTS motorsports site.
Get a copy of VE master from Moates site (8D version)
You can make several datalogs with DM until the license is needed.
Make a handfull of logs and run them through VE master
(save you bin with a new name first!)
This "should" get you safe to run and you can then get a feel for putting the Inj constant to where it needs to be.
You should also be able to get the number off the injectors (or a partial anyway)
Do some searching online to see if you can ID them.

Re: newbi After first burn
Thank for hitting my with the common sense stick.
I will use standard tuning techniques.
I narrowed down the injector to Edlebrock, they have 19 and 29lbs that have the blue electrical connector. If I have 19lbs in there I should run out of fuel in a hurry so I will try to monitor the duty cycle while tuning. There is a section in the "come in for a free tune" thread on duty cycle.
I have 4 days of 75 degree and sunny weather that I can do some tuning.
So wish me luck, I'd like to have the lower VE table close when the weekend is over.

Re: newbi After first burn
Okay I spent the first day of my long weekend trying to see if I could manipulate the tables in tunerpro after getting a fairly good understanding of file types and how to open things I figured I'll have to wright an excel program to do what I want. Because I want to feel like I moved forward this weekend I decided to use JP88SS's suggestion and I downloaded datamaster.
I made two changes to my chip I told it its a 350 with 8 cylinder (original chip said 305 no cylinders)and I entered 29lbs for the injectors (original 19lbs). Then I went on a very scary trip. I hopped on the thruway and headed out to get 20 mins or so if data. The car started to smoke so I got of at the first exit then it stalled and would not restart. finally the the smoke clear and I got her to start and drove it home with the exhaust so hot I was wondering what was going to start on fire. the exhaust fell of with about a half mile to go, and I finally landed it in the driveway and grabbed the hose to put out any fires. The exhaust was so hot it melted my rubber exhaust hanger.(plug check indicates very rich mixture, hot exhaust from all the unburnt fuel).
Note one: Bring you best running chip with you as a spare. It would have save me some heart ache.
Note two: Make sure you new software is working correctly before heading out. I missed the run.
What is driving my nuts is why did changing the fuel constant make it go that way? When i did a plug check when i use the 19lbs constant it was lean (no color on the plugs), (I will verify this in datapro this weekend). I would think in my very limited experience that it would lengthen the pause with for the small injectors and shorten it for the lager ones. This would flip flop what happened.
Oh well back out to the garage.

Re: newbi After first burn
cfgill, if this is still with $8D then the cylinder count needs to be at 0. It is a code, not the actual number of cylinders. By making it an 8 the spark timing is way off.

Re: newbi After first burn
Thanks RBob,
That helps I was burning the fuel as it was going out the exhaust valve and not where it needed to be.
I'll set it back to 0
