First tune of 8746
First tune of 8746
Hello all, you are great and I hope you can help me. I have done a lot of reading and have modified a axkw bin to turn off the egr, disable vats, and set BPC to 132, and set timming to 14. I am ready to start changing my VE tables but not convince I don't have another problem.
I have a 82 305 w/ an edlebrook cam, timming set *14 edlebrook performer intake w/ a TBI adapter and tbi unit from a 91 camaro. I have this all wired and it runs, may I say, well at first until the ECM goes into closed loop. At this point it will idle but as soon as I give it gas or if I am driving it wants to die. I did get a MAP high 33 code this last time I dataloged. Is this normal? I did try and data log and attached is the log. If this is expcted with my set I will continue and attempt to ajust my VE tables as outlined in Come in for a free tune.
Other notes: I have a O2 sensor, no VSS and no IAT sensor(yet)

test map sensor. maybe defective. is it attached to manifold port?
datalog does not show much cept ve tables need more fuel. if dying while under power could be many issues. i would test fuel pump. do you have fpg installed?

Re: First tune of 8746
The MAP is ducted to one of the ports off the TBI. The MAP is fairly new but, I will test it.
Although my fuel pump is new, I'm using Airtex E2182, capable 50GPH @ 110PSI, I have read several reasons to plum in a FPG so I will. The engine runs great until it is warm. If I turn off the ignition (wired to remove power from the ecm) and back on it will run good again, at least for a short while.
Thanks for the advice, this will take me a few days.

Re: First tune of 8746
I hope this is correct. If ECM has no power it will not save the "learned" BLM. So correction to stoich begins every time you start vehicle. Remember to clear malf codes and reset BLM to 128 you disconnect battery terminal. You are in essence doing that.

Re: First tune of 8746
The high MAP error may be from the engine not running too well. It is a common error when the engine is close to stalling and otherwise having issues running.
The MAP should be plumbed to the rear port on the TBI. Between the fuel inlet/outlets. One or more of the front ports are ported vacuum. Which will 'mess up' a MAP sensor reading.
As for the BLMs, the '8746 is one of the few ECMs that resets them all to 128 at key-on.
RBob.

Yes, my engine did stall and I did connect the MAP onto one of the front ports...I will move it to the rear tonight.
I can easly change the power wiring, if it helps to keep battery pwr on it I will do that.

I checked my MAP sensor and it is good. I did move it to the rear port and rewired the ECM to keep pwr. so all the part to my TBI and computer are good.
I installed a fuel pressure gauge and found I have a problem. When I pwr on the ECM it does its 3 sec run just fine and puts 12 PSI on the line but, after I few minutes it starts to drop pressure. The pressure drops to about 4psi. I am frustrated since the pump is brand new. the pump seems to work good for about 10 minutes and then I just loose line pressure. I will have to drop the tank and test the pump.
Thanks again for everyone's inputs, I was convince I had a different problem but you we right.

I believe the FP does drop over time. Not sure if it bleeds past REG or back to tank. I never paid mcuch attention. A better test is whether FP holds at WOT. I have never done it but "duct tape gauge to windshield" Or place inside pass window and have passenger monitor.
Re: First tune of 8746
Ok, got my fuel pump issue fixed...the sock filter fell off and was clogging the intake. Now I have about 28-30psi and the engine runs a lot better, good enough to drive anyway.
Small issue with winaldl. It is not updating the BLM table. I ran the engine for 20 minutes, drove around for 10+ mins and the table never gave me any numbers. engine temp was 190, the table cells would flash green, dash updated w/ rpm, tps, o2 ect, the o2 table updated. any known reason or fix?
again thanks, I'm staring to figure this out.

Re: First tune of 8746
Why rewire it when Rbob just told you that your ECM resets the BLMs at key-on anyway?
Make sure you're ECM is going into closed loop to get BLMs.
Re: First tune of 8746
Yes, or at least I believe so. I can see the raw data being updated, the dash updates, and the O2 table populates. The small field at the top of the program flashes green. Is it possibly not going into closed loop.

Re: First tune of 8746
All I had to do was move the connector to a open circiut on my fuse block. second, the fuel pump would not run(prime) when I turned the key to the run since it always had pwr, now it will prime when I turn the key to run.
From winaldl is there a simple way of knowing if the ecm is in closed or open loop?
Thanks

Re: First tune of 8746
Alright I'm back from a long vacation ready to try and get my 305 running good. I found the closed loop flag. With the problems I had before I decided to try a new(to me) 8746, this has not helped. neither ecm will go into closed loop. I have noticed the idle/cool flag stay set, even when the temp is reaches 180, is this a problem? My prom ID intermittently shows up, is this a problem? The tps reads .65v at idle were aldl has .54v set a defualt, I know I can change it in winaldl, confused on what volt is should be at, yes it does vary up when I move the throttle, is this a problem? for the first time i've noticed the air divered flags are getting set, is this a problem? I'm not sure what could have gone wrong, it was going into closed loop when I had the fuel pressure problem as soon as I fix that in never went back into closed loop, i did not touch the ecm or tbi(other than moving a pwr connector to a different circuit) when I remounted my fuel pump and fixed the sock filter that fell off and was clogging the intake to the pump.
Notes:
all sensors seem to be working
O2 - fills in table .430 to .460 range
temp - read accurate compared to my analog gage
map - varies .80 to 3.xx
IAT - varies (don't have the data but I remember it was giving diff values)
TPS - .65 to (don't have the data but I remember it gave diff values)
I even tried a 7747 I had it does the same thing.
