starting point for timing with patriot heads and s/c
starting point for timing with patriot heads and s/c
Due to all of the changes I did to my engine, I don't know what table to use as a starting point. When I first started with the truck I had vortec heads on it and a cam, so I used a table that someone posted up from their setup that was similar to mine and I worked with that. Now I have the alum patriot heads bigger cam and s/c so I have no idea what to start with. I saw a couple of other people on here were running the same heads so I thought I'd put up a post to see if anyone here can share anything. I'm going to take one day of my holiday at least to try and tune in the timing. I am hoping to drive the truck over the same terrain with 8 different bins all set 2 degrees apart so I can compare the tps at different rpm vs map points. I am hoping that by using the logs from the runs I can get it pretty close to where it needs to be, I just need something safe to start with. If all else fails I will prob end up using the stock tbi table to start with and go from there.

In my point of view, its hard to determine what your chasing because with different heads, settings change. Adding a differenet cam will also make settings change. There are so many combinations to work with but you can never be sure. In my honost opinion, take her to a DYNO shop and have them do the programming. It'll cost you but there are to many routes to take without knowing what you want with a particular setup.

yeah you can start with a stock type table and add some timing to it, especially around idle cells for the big cam and new heads. Vortec heads usually dont need much timing compared to other heads out there due to chamber design. So you may need some more with those new heads. For wot 101kpa map, I'd set it to around 32-34 deg to start. Then pull a degree per psi of boost as a start. Go conservative until you dial in the fuel and then go from there.

I've already made arrangements with a tuning shop in montreal but he won't be there on the week I am visiting
I will be making arrangements however for my next visit.
I will be starting with the stock tbi timing curve and make changes according to the log. VE tables are dialed in pretty good right now, can't wait to see how they change once I've played with the timing.
