First TPI install... EBL General Questions
First TPI install... EBL General Questions
Hey hopefully I don't get flamed here, this is a pretty intense section of knowledge here... I apoligize if my questions are pretty basic.
I'm completing a fresh 383 TPI build for my camaro, and thought I would look ahead a little bit into tuning. My original plan was to dump the specs (since I know everything in it) to a tuner and have them burn me a chip to run. I'm running the 227165 computer. I was looking to have the VATS removed, EGR removed, and an obvious custom tune. I'm running headers, no cats, 52mm throttle body, larger injectors, FI compatible comp cam, siamesed runners, etc.
Then I saw EBL (dynamicEFI.com) up for sale in the for sale section of this forum. Read into it a little bit and was wondering if it would do everything I'm looking for (VATS, EGR delete, etc). I poked around on the website and found that it deleted the MAF sensor but needs a MAP sensor. So it basically converts it to a 90-92 style programming style? Is it missing any other sensors that the speed density setups have? I get weary when systems delete sensors, I had an analog Holley Pro-Jection unit do the same thing and it never ran well. I haven't purchased a MAF sensor yet, so that's why I was considering this setup. I was going for MAF setup just because I have the computer, harness, and upper plenum for it. Do I need any additional wiring for the MAP sensor? Is this setup not recommended for educated beginners? I have a laptop (and a college degree lol), is there any other investment I need to make to do this?

Re: First TPI install... EBL General Questions
I am in the process of doing the same conversion. I originally started with an 87 305 TPI 165 MAF ECM and finished with a 350 Ramjet EBL. I replaced the MAF sensor with a MAP and did some other rewiring.
Overall, its not too difficult. I have an extra new and used MAP sensor that i purchased in error. Needed a different MAP for the ramjet vs the TPI.
The EBL offers a lot of advantages, including a bulit in learn function using a WB O2 sensor, which I plan to use.

Thanks... I haven't gotten much of a response so maybe I'll stick with my original plan and run a pre-tuned chip for now. Then maybe next summer worry about diy programming...

Re: First TPI install... EBL General Questions
You can program output devices such as the IAC (via idle speed), EGR, closed/open loop fueling and so on. To wire in the MAP the former MAF wires are used. There are a few pins that need to be moved in the ECM harness connectors. Then just plug in the EBL ECM and turn the key.
The EBL Flash is speed density by using a MAP sensor. Can use a 1-bar for a non-boosted engine. Then a 2 or 3 bar MAP for boosted engines.
If you pick up an EBL Flash ECM used, the Port Mod is required. If it doesn't have it you can send it to Dynamic EFI for the installation. It is an inexpensive mod that changes the injector firing rate to the once per revolution for port injection systems.
If your laptop has a serial port the EBL Flash is a complete system. Nothing else to buy. If there isn't a serial port (D shaped 9-pin male connector), then the use of a USB to Serial adapter cable is required. Just get one with the latest FTDI chip set.

RBob,
I'm pretty interested in this setup as well.
Do you have a writeup somewhere explaining how to do the MAF->SD conversion for EBL?
