?Stock Timing Map for '89 LB9?
?Stock Timing Map for '89 LB9?
I have searched and searched and can not find this info anywhere. What is the stock timing curve on an 89 LB9 from 1000 to 6000 rpm at WOT (0 vac, 100 % throttle). Also, if someone has these numbers how do they relate to your initial (base) timing. Do you add the base to the curve, or is this with the base included.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

If nobody has the table, that is fine. Maybe though someone can tell me the total timing at WOT. Again would this be with or without the base timing added.
Thanks
Thanks

what are you really asking for? If you just want to see the timing curve, download tunerpro and the 89 LB9 .bin from moates.net and look at the whole timing map for yourself.
Re: ?Stock Timing Map for '89 LB9?
Thanks for the reply. I would like to download tunerpro, but I am currently in West Africa and internet is a tad bit faster than dial-up on a good day. That is if it is working at all. Anyway, what I am really asking for, is if I have 6 degrees initial lead, what is the total advance I will see at WOT? I have run the car upwards of 10-12 degrees initial, and i'm just wondering if the stock computer controlled timing is really that low. I figured it was just a simple question for people who burn chips. They all started with a base tune somewhere. It was definitely easier to ask in a post, instead of taking the hood off, putting a timing tape on the balancer, sitting on the strut tower, and checking the timing while my wife was power-shifting the car into 3rd. I will definetly download from Moates before I attempt that one.
So, if anyone can tell me the maximum timing advance the stock chip adds to the base in a open loop, 100% throttle, 0 knock retard, 0 Vac, high mass air flow situation (mid to high RPM), I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank You

Re: ?Stock Timing Map for '89 LB9?
hopefully this helps. This is a MAF LB9 5speed timing map. From what I've seen the 'stick shift cars have more aggressive timing than the automatics do.
Re: ?Stock Timing Map for '89 LB9?
Thank You Mean Z. My car is a five speed, so it was exactly what I was looking for. That table was great, but now I have more questions. I may be wrong, but that timing is taking into account the factory specified base, isn't it? Does the PE offset add 6 degrees? If so, that would put the stock timing at over 36 degrees!!!! That is pretty hot. So, if I added 6 degrees at the distributor (total of 12 base), will I really be at 42 degrees total advance? I mean with no KR of course. I just can't imagine that much ignition lead on gasoline.
Now I'm amazed I haven't destroyed this poor engine, I put the distributor back at 6 degrees when I added a 125 hp hit of nitrous. 36 degrees and nitrous sounds dangerous. I figured factory timing was around 28 degrees at the most.
Thank you again for the table, and I would appreciate someone verifying my theory on the base timing being included in the numbers on the map.

Oh man, I just looked at the table again. At 4400 it is only 27 degrees. That makes more sense. With Power Enrichment that would put it at around 33, pretty hot by today's standards, but probably doable on a smog-era 305. Fuel was supposedly better in the 80's. Still too hot for nitrous in my opinion. By the way, what happens after 4800 rpm and 208 g/s?

The stock tune calls for 6* base, that is specified in the chip. As far as I know, the values you see in the timing table are the actual values the ECM commands, you do NOT add 6* to what the table shows.
During operation, the ECM takes the number in the timing table, subtracts the base advance specified in the chip (which is the amount you manually put in by advancing the distributor) and moves the distributor to that amount.
For example, when you set the distributor to 8* advance with 6* specified in the stock chip, you are getting 2* more advance globally.
The maximum advance allowed in the stock chip is 40.08*
Oh yea, when the engine is above 4800rpm, it uses the values listed in the 4800rpm row...

Interesting.. Is there any way for the computer to recognize RPM's over 4800? And maybe add different values above 4800 rather than have it use the 4800 row values?
