Re: few questions on burning prom

I would definately buy the stuff to do it yourself. To get started with basic stuff you will spend about the same as the "race prom" and be alot better off. It will take some research and a learning curve but that is the fun of it. www.moates.net

This software (TunerPro RT) is for GM OBD1 only as far as I know....

Looks like TP RT has a ford version on the Moates website but I have NO idea how any of that works.... GO PONTIAC!!!! hahah

This is what I started tuning with. It was a cost but relatively inexpensive. What i liked was the tuning program was very basic and at no charge I could all additional parameters as I came to realize they could benefiit me. Support was very good. Since then(2003?) I have gone to a flash based program called dynamicefi.com.

Here is tunercat: tunercat.com.

To datalog I began with winALDL again very basic and I will say easy to understand.

Re: few questions on burning prom

You can erase stock chips but need a UV eraser, then you can burn stock chips but need a burner and even then they seem to be very unreliable. From a guy who went that route I would say just jump up a few more bucks and go with the AutoProm from Moates. It will not erase a stock chip or program a stock chip but will read them. With the AutoProm you need an adapter for your ECM then you can use an erasable re programmable and very reliable Flash chip. No need for a UV eraser.

With AutoProm and TunerPro software which is included with the AutoProm you will have Data Logging, Real Time changes while you drive and a chip burner when your done. I don't think theres a better alternative available at any cost. HTH

Re: few questions on burning prom

It can be done even more inexpensively than that.
You need at least the following;
1. Burner. moates Burn2 runs about $85.00 I think
2. ALDL cable. I use the one from aldlcables.com It was $59.00
3. Flash chip(s). I use SST27SF512 chips. check ebay, also Xenocron has them for 4.00
4. TunerproRT software

I take a stock memcal and remove the stock eprom and solder in the flash chip. I have a really basic adapter made for my burner that is nothing more than some header pins and radioshack perfboard which allows me to just plug in the memcal. Cost for the adaptor is about 2 or 3 dollars total.
once you have the basic equipment to burn and scan you can reprogram as many cars as you wish for about $4.00 each.
All other products such as G3 adapters, wideband sensors and eprom emulators will make it faster and more convenient, but you can get started with what I have listed above.

The punisher is talking about the way that I went. I have used this method for years with no problem. Lots of fun! and simple

Re: few questions on burning prom

right but with the adaptor an autoprom all the soldering can be eliminated, although if i did go that route it would save me 200 bucks hmmm, i can solder good, got a fine prong solder gun also

Re: few questions on burning prom

Tuenrpro and autoprom are made by different people and are separate products. Also tunerproRT has a 10 second NAG window if unregistered, but you can get started without buying, and pay your thanks when you can afford it. The price for this EXCELLENT software is VERY reasonable(unlike some other tuning/scanning software).
