APU1 AutoProm Package and GP1-Now what?

I suppose where I am at now is which file to start out with. Moates has a few bin files but I really don't know how to tell one from another. My car has an old Lingenfelter built 383. It has the accel/lingenfelter intake and edelbrock shorty headers with y pipe. No cats and 3" back to a magnaflow.

This whole thing started with the check engine light. All I wanted to do was get it inspected. Come to find out the MAF had been raped by the previous owner. The thing is the car runs like a champ with the MAF that way. I ordered a new used MAF that had been unmolested and plugged it in. Check engine light went off but the car became undrivable. It would idle a bit rough and as soon as I put it in gear it would die.

The bin file is what is actually on the chip, you need the proper adx and xdf file to be able to read what is on your chip using the tuning software.
What Ecm do you have?

Re: APU1 AutoProm Package and GP1-Now what?

It might be less complicated if you go to Tunerpro instead.

Go to downloads and definitions, there you will see definitiions for different ecm, yours will use $6e and $32/$32b.
Download both the bin definition and also the datastream definition if you want to datalog.

Make sure you read the tutorials in the stickies!

Ok, so I downloaded the 32b.xdf and the 165_160.ads. Which I have no idea what either of those mean. Now i need to download one of those 3 bin files on tunerpro?

The xdf, is used by tunerpro to read the bin(chip). The ADS is used by tunerpro to datalog to a computer.
You need to open tunerpro, look for XDF on the menu, open, select the XDF file from your comp.

Do you have the ninth injector (cold start injector)

Re: APU1 AutoProm Package and GP1-Now what?

Ok I got the 32b.xdf to open up on tunerpro rt. Is this enough to get the car running? I tried to open a bin file from tunerpro downloads but it does nothing. Do I have to be connected to the car before I can open the bin?

Yes, do a search for the location, you will then know it when you see it.

To save a BIN from the site, right click and "save target as".

Is your chip soldered onto the prom?

Pretty sure there is no ninth injector. There is not an extra line coming off the back of either fuel rail. I have the super ram and I don't think it came with the ninth injector. But I did find some critters nest in the valley under the intake.

I have downloaded the bin from tuner pro website. I have the chip adapter for live emulation.

Well I guess it was soldered in.....but its not anymore. Guess I'll be driving around with a laptop for awhile.

Dont always need the laptop, you can run off the autoprom.

Re: APU1 AutoProm Package and GP1-Now what?

I have downloaded both the 6e and 32b bins with their ads files. Still car won't start. TP is saying that the aldl is not reading but that should not keep the car from starting. What am I missing. Help!

Yes, it will prevent a startup because you have no bin loaded into the autoprom. Your prom is now by-passed due to the G1.

You need to connect to the Autoprom before doing anything.
Did you hit the 'intialize emulation hardware' button on the tool bar?

Yes, it says that it is emulating. I downloaded the bin to the autoprom. I was just reading on the moates FAQ that I need to plug everything in and then open TP. When I get home I'll try a couple different things. Anymore suggestions are very welcomed. I seem to be tuning handicapped.

Its a little confusing to get tunerpro started, once you get it figured out, you won"t have many issues.

Everybody says getting started is the hard part. I'm just ready to be done with the hard part. And of course once again I can't work on it tonight.

Re: APU1 AutoProm Package and GP1-Now what?

So....I'm an idiot. I finally got the car to start and run like it has been. I forgot a couple minor details when I was installing the GP1 adapter. And THEN I had the OE chip in wrong. wow. Now I need to find a good bin to start with. I'm guessing one of the Corvette bins since I have aluminum heads. Any suggestions? I still can't drive the car with MAF plugged in until I get a better calibration for it.

If the car was running okay with the other tune, why not start there?

It may be easier starting with a 'known' bin, make a few changes to see how the engine reacts, and go from there.
Starting from scratch can be very frustrating, leading you to run in circles.

If you decide to start with a new bin, you have to adjust a few things to make it work for initial start up.

Make sure you read every sticky up top to get a grasp of what does what.

Well the only problem with using the tune I have is that the car will barely idle with the MAF plugged in. Unplugged it runs great. Thats how this whole thing started. But I will plug in the MAF and let it run for a minute to see what I can find out. Thanks again.

I'm not sure what would cause other than a wrong file. I see no rpm's, but is the car running at that moment?

Well, I tried a couple different files today and found one that gave me a bit more data on the dash. But the car still wouldn't start. The TPS was functioning and I believe the temps were reading right but hard to say because the car wasn't actually running.

Also, I did some cross referencing on the chip that is in my ecu. It appears that it is for an 88 firebird 305 with manual tranny. Why on earth one somebody put that in this car?

Lastly, I found a wire cut on one of the pigtails that plug into the ecm. I looking for a pin out diagram now to see what it controls.

Well the wire that is cut should be "M/T od, A/T TCC". Gees, what next?

I would re-connect the wire, I don't know why it would have been cut.

You may be better off starting with a new bin.
A close to stock arap bin should start your combo, but you need to know what you have for mods, there are a few things you would need to change for initial start up.

Re: APU1 AutoProm Package and GP1-Now what?

Is it possible that someone may have reprogrammed a OE chip? The id on the chip in my car goes to an 88 5-speed. Mine is an auto. When I downloaded my current bin to tunerpro and checked the prom id it matches an 89 auto vette. I was under the assumption that this couldn't be done but....

Re: APU1 AutoProm Package and GP1-Now what?

Take a look at this link here; https://www.thirdgen.org/promintro.

Very good read about chips and such.

It doesn't matter really what chip was used, the auto/manual trans settings are done in the tune. Did you purchase any new flash chips?

What bin are you trying to start the car with?

Very good read about chips and such.

It doesn't matter really what chip was used, the auto/manual trans settings are done in the tune. Did you purchase any new flash chips?

What bin are you trying to start the car with?
At this point I am comparing my bin to the ARAP bin in TP to see what differences I see. So far it appears that the timing is the only major difference but even that doesn't seem to be to far off. I was going to try and start the car with my chips bin in TP with emulation but have not been able to get to it.

I do have several extra chips that came with all the Moates stuff.

I'm on lunch so I will go and read up on the link you posted.

Re: APU1 AutoProm Package and GP1-Now what?

So...I have used the apu1 to save my stock bin to my hard drive. But when I load it back to the autoprom to do some live emulation the car won't start. I don't understand what the difference is. I assume I am using the right def and datastream because I am getting good data from the ALDL. Still can't get the car to start with any other bins.

If you have had the car running with this bin, It should work to start the car.
Is you cable from ap1 to the ecm on in the correct direction? It will go on the wrong way, causing a no start, or limp home mode.
