which zif socket to use?
Hello guys. I almost had a life threatening incident. I was close to bending the heck out of my EPROM when I was installing it inside the Moates G1 board. So my question is, which zif socket should I use inside my 7165 ECM?
1. Low Profile = http://www.moates.net/s4-aries-28pin....html?cPath=26
2. Bulky socket = http://www.moates.net/s2-aries-28pin....html?cPath=26
Is there any soldering involved?

Either ZIF socket will work. I opted for the "bulky version" because I have read a few complaints about the EPROM not holding as well in the low profile version.
No, no soldering needed, it will plug directly into the DIP socket of your adapter.

Cool. So with the bulky zif socket, is there still enough room to screw down the ECMs dust cover?

Damb. I'll just cut up some of my kids bike tires and make an elevated gasket.
Re: which zif socket to use?
I had connectivity issues when using a ZIF. Stiff suspension. It was not soldered but not sure if that would have helped. RadioS sells a neat insertion tool.

I have ran vehicles for a few years with ZIF sockets, without issue.

Re: which zif socket to use?
So then this one would work just as much as good as the Moates one correct?

Re: which zif socket to use?
I've had a few different types of zif sockets, and can say that the "Textool" type above, while bulky is very strong and grips the pins pretty tightly.
I havent run a zif in a car very much, so I've never had a problem.

Where you able to put the ECMs dust cover back on or is the profile too high?

Re: which zif socket to use?
Probably too high. I dont use the adaptor boards like most do. I currently use a low profile socket soldered directly into a memcal. This clears easily. This is one is for tuning, I solder the sf512 flash chips directly to the memcal's for permanent installations or when tuning will be only done occasionally. In this case I have a simple adaptor to plug the whole memcal into my burner instead of removing the chip.
When I used the textool type it was a 40pin version on an older homemade adapter using a very high capacity flash chip from a computer motherboard, custom stuff and does not apply. It was simply a comment on the ruggedness of the textool type zif socket.

when I had the big adapter on my car the little cover wouldn't fit, but I need more tuning so the computer is still laying on the floor.

Re: which zif socket to use?
personally, i've only ever had 1 instance of the PROM moving around in the ZIF while driving and causing the ECM to go into limp-mode.
i also use 7727 type underhood ECMs, so the bulky one worked perfectly fine for me on top of my G3.

Re: which zif socket to use?
Buy from Moates and keep them in business so they can keep developing products that tuners need and want.

Re: which zif socket to use?
Ok! Got the Aries zif. Gonna have to mod a elevated spacer for my ECM today. Thanks for the input fellow members.
