2 simple questions then I'm ready to get started! Please Help!

Sorry to waste people's time but I have what I hope are just 2 simple questions keeping me from getting into tuning.

1st, is there a way to figure out exactly what ECM I have? I bought a complete TPI setup that I believe is out of an '89 trans am but I checked the numbers on it and they are the same for '86 - '89 but they have different masks. What can I do to make sure it is an '89? This is critical because I am swapping my stock 305 tbi for a mildly built 350 tpi and I want it tuned in.

2nd, I did my best to read everything before I started asking questions but I have to. I understand the components that I need for the process but the part #'s in the Prom burning Guide are way out of date. Could someone recommend a quality economic Programmer? I want whatever I need but I'm more or less a poor college student (thankfully a computer engineer/computer science double major )

Any help or info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Blade

Open the ECM's small cover. In the MEMCAL, on the PROM will be a silver label with a 3 or 4 LETTER code. Post back what it is.

For logging/burning: www.moates.net:

G1 adapter
Burn2
27SF512 Flash Proms
An ALDL cable (USB or Serial dependent upon your laptop)

www.tunerpro.net:

Download Tuner Pro RT

Here is the ALDL cable i have, you need this to data log(connect your laptop to the car)

Thats all you need to burn chips and data log , else then the free software, your files and such that are free also. And of course a lap top if you plan to datalog. Its a little bit of $$ but it worth it and works good for me.

Im a poor college student too!!! Im in Heat, vent, A/C (HAVC) program. I wish i was better at computers.....

I have no idea about your ECU situation though, someone will chime in and let ya know whats up with that...

That's less exciting than I was expecting

Looks like it was a good thing I checked cause I'm definitely going to need a retune. Thanks Rbob!

Re: 2 simple questions then I'm ready to get started! Please Help!

Sorry to revive an old thread but I was rereading it now that I can actually afford to tune the poor car and I have one more question that I didn't notice before.

Rbob, and fasteddi suggested basically the same equipment (which I greatly appreciate) but fast also said he's using the g1 adapter and ZIF socket.

My question is, do I need the zif or is it something for other applications? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The zif socket is to let you easily remove the chip. Basically take in in and out as you want, insted of actally soldering the chip.
