Adding IAT, physical mounting
Adding IAT, physical mounting
I'm interested in adding an IAT sensor for the EBL and I'd like to get some ideas for how to mount one cleanly. I have an open element air cleaner on top of the TBI, just sucking underhood air. I'm assuming the sensor wants to be in the air cleaner, but what's the best way? Do you drill a hole in the bottom part of the assembly to mount it? If anyone has any pics of their similar type setup that would really help.

Yep. Drill a hole in the bottom & put a nut on the inside, maybe a dash of threadlock of your **** about such things.

I wonder if it matters much if the sensor is in the air cleaner or just near it underhood? I only ask because I'm a little squeamish about drilling my nice air cleaner, and it's nice to be able to pull it off in 2 seconds.

Yep, that is the one. I pulled mine off the bottom of my TPI plenum & put it in front of the TB& behind the MAF years ago. The old IAT is still there in the bottom of the plenum just to plug the hole up.
ATGO has this article about relocating it. http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=24
And underhood would only get underhood hot temps, not the temp of the actual incoming air.

Re: Adding IAT, physical mounting
I prefer to install the IAT in the manifold below/after the throttle plates, when possible.
Re: Adding IAT, physical mounting
I was hoping for a spare spot to plug in on my manifold but I don't have one. Only option would be to make double duty of the spot I'm using to drive my brake booster. I can't really figure how to do that though.
Re: Adding IAT, physical mounting
IAT and MAT are configured differntly, temps inside manifold are very differnt then incoming air.
If you just mount it in the bottom of open air filter base it will be fine. Cold air intake tubed to front grill area would be better.
CTS also reads the same as IAT and much cheaper and more robust. Although response time is greater.

I admit I have the open element largely for looks. I like not having all that plumbing underhood. And I can pop the air cleaner off in seconds without having to deal with breathers and ductwork, etc.

This is the kind of thing we're talking about, right?

The '92 Camaro TBI (VIN E) IAT is a grommet mount. May be easier to use and is also less bulky.
