recommend a PROM programmer device
Hey guys, I'm going to take the plunge with tuning my 88 Sport Coupe.
I want to pull the tuning data file from my existing PROM.
My understanding is that I need a PROM programmer tool to do this.
Can you please recommend a PROM programmer for me?
I read the page at https://www.thirdgen.org/promintro/
Lot of good info there. But the link to the author's recommended PROM programmer isn't working for me.
I confess to being a little baffled about the programmer tool.
The tools at http://www.moates.net/chip-programming-c-94.html look very affordable, and the descriptions sound like what I probably need.
Then I google "PROM programmer," and I get hits for tools which are significantly more expensive.
I'm very much of the mind to "buy once, cry once." But, I don't want to needlessly overpay for equipment which exceeds the needs of hobby tuning.
Hard to believe I've had this car for five years now, since my first thread at https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/hist...wner-88-a.html
I recently acquired a 93 S10 truck, which I believe is also OBD1-type.
So, I'm hoping all this learn-how-to-tune effort will pay off on two vehicles.
I've downloaded TunerPro, and I have a Moates ALDL cable inbound.
I downloaded an XDF and ADS files described as correct for "86-89 F Body V6 (LB6/LB8)
(ADS by Robert Saar)" from http://www.tunerpro.net/downloadBinDefs.htm#GM
If my understanding is correct, one of these files is a "BIN" file like the BIN on my current PROM in my car.
My RPO code is LB8.
From my just-getting-started reading, I understand I need a PROM programmer device to copy the existing BIN file from the PROM currently installed in my car. I would prefer to read the data on my actual PROM rather than assume that the file I downloaded is close enough.
Thanks in advance, and I hope you all will have patience with me asking real noobish questions as I get traction with OBD1 tuning.

Re: recommend a PROM programmer device
I want to have full read and write capability.
Are there any specific models you recommend?
I'm completely new to this, so I'm really not sure what I'm looking at, or what I'm looking for. If this is old hat stuff, I apologize. I'm trying to gather the tools for the job, and then I will study them to learn how to use them correctly.

Re: recommend a PROM programmer device
I'm not in a super position to be offering advice cuz I'm a beginner too. I just ordered the Moates AutoProm. The reason I ordered this is the emulation capability. With this capability you can try a tune with the emulation capability then if you like it, burn the chip. This unit also reads chips. Seems to do pretty much everything in one box. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Good luck.
Oh, I also ordered the GP1 interface to get the AutoProm connected to the ECM. Forgot to mention I'm working with a 1991 TPI 'vette.

Won't help you read your chip, but I'm a big fan of the Moates Ostrich 2 emulator for tuning. Lets you rapidly iterate on tunes without having to pull the chip every time to reprogram it. Bit pricey but worth it in my opinion. Integrates with Tuner Pro which is nice. Just another tool you may want to consider. http://www.moates.net/ostrich-20-the...eed-p-169.html

Re: recommend a PROM programmer device
you can allways use a moates g2 and sst on your 88. You would also need a g1 for your truck.

Re: recommend a PROM programmer device
It may be 2-3 weeks. I'm still getting things cleaned up under the hood. With all the after market stuff I installed I had some issues with the wire bundles and a couple of the solenoids ( need to modify the mounting). Just ordering all this stuff so I'll be ready to go when I finish. It'll be interesting to see how much things change, the only things stock in the engine now are the oil pan, oil cooler and fuel rail.

I would go with the AutoProm. It does everything you need and emulation, all in one box. Plus it's easy to use. I had one when I was still OBD1
