Hi. Trying to learn about tuning.. what is EBL? Can't find answer anywhere. Also.. can anyone recommend a book that'll give me a good starting point to get started with tuning? I've got an 85 TA TPI 5.0. So I'm not interested in tuning any obd2 cars.. only the obd1... or maybe there's no difference. I've done egr delete on my car and heard somewhere that i may need to adjust the tune so computer knows egr is no longer there?

I bought EBL 5 years ago. I wanted to start tuning. I do not have a background in tuning but I do in IT. How hard could it be, it's just a computer. I am inclined to do stupid things like believe the timing is right or I don't have any vacuum leaks or header leaks and my O2 sensor is good when it's toast. These are huge problems when you start tuning. But if you don't know that you are chasing your tail trying to determine why your tune does not work. Like 25 tunes and it's still not right. I have suffered a lot in this journey but I have made progress. I printed and studied over 1800 pages of the tuning EBL thread. This thread is not a book. It's like overhearing dozens of conversations going on in a big room amongst people of different skill levels and different setups all overseen by the jedi master Rbob. This approach is a very steep learning curve. None of this for me was a practical guide to step x step to tuning. Actually I never found one and am still amazed by how much mystery there is to the magic of FI tuning.

Now maybe I am a special case. I have lofty dreams. My car is a twin turbo 350 89 Formula with water/meth injection. With the tune to date it is pretty much too scary at this moment to put my foot all the way down. In the past I've melted pistons, broke rings. I burned up the 700R4. But that's me and what I do with my car.

Bottom line is like ZZ3Astro once said, if you have not tuned before you need to find a tuning friend. If you have tuned before your learning curve will probably be much less steep.

I would not expect someone here to teach you or tune your car for you. I don't think one 101 source exists. Read the EBL website tuning guides for starters though.

But the mountain is there to climb and sherpas have been know to be seen in this area.

Im planning on getting an EBL Flash P4 as soon as they're back in stock... with all the people raving about it, I'm really curious to see what it can do for me.

All you need to do is plug the vacuum line that was going to the egr valve and call it a day.

Keep in mind, we are all volunteers here. No one, including my very ownself, is entitled to anything.

The EBL has been around for decades. There are tons of information on it on TGO and other sites, even YouTube. The creator of the EBL is active on TGO. If you acquire an EBL, you will get support.

It is both hardware and software, along with updated ECM firmware, a XDF file and documentation. Sticking with the EBL Flash, the ECM that it uses has a small board soldered to some ribbon cables. This board holds the PROM and the CALPAK, and is removed from the ECM. In its place the EBL Flash board is soldered to the ribbon cables and mounted via the same hardware as previously used.

This EBL Flash board provides for a place to hold the firmware and 'BIN'. It has flash memory on board, no chip swapping.

It also provides a high speed data interface. Which is used to transmit ECM data to a PC/laptop, and to 'flash' the board with a new calibration (within seconds). The firmware is also update-able.

The included What's Up Display (WUD), is a Windows program that is used to monitor ECM information, data log, analyze the data, do VE learns, get trip information, areas of spark knock, diagnostic display, AND to 'flash' in a new BIN (calibration).
