730 conversion to a 7749?

I am looking for the schematic of a typhoon ECM wiring harnes. I plan to convert my ecm to the 7749 so I can utilize the boost readings for my superchaged Z28. does anyone have a diagram I can see?? HELP! I can't find it anywhere? I tried to go on the syty msg board and i get a server error every time i try and post?

7730 to 7749

Craiger, I have copies that I printed from my friends ALLDATA. If you would like copies I can fax them to you. Please send me your fax number I will bring them with me to work.

I made the same decision a few months ago and am now building a harness from my 165 to a 7749 the only thing I am lacking at this point is which three pin injector drivers won't burn up with 8 P&H injectors. If you figure it out before I do please let me know.

Best regards

Saturn5,

Can you show me where each wire goes to the connector on the ECM? My ECM did not come with connectors to the wiring harness, so i guess i must purchase an addaptor kit and pin each wire to the corresponding pin on the 730 ecm.

Does anyone know if i should use my stock z28 memcal or should i use a stock typhoon memcal? I'm a little confused on how to use the 7749 since it is for a v6,not a v8?

Thank you again!

First we need to know what harness your starting from, is it a '165 MAF harness or a '730 SD harness? Mike Davis's site has very good instructions on repinning a '165 MAF to a '730 SD. The '749 is very close to the '730 pinning, be awhere that several wires are connected internally but are pinned differently from '730 to '749. Get a copy of the '730 harness pinout and compare to the '749 I posted. Memcals must match # cylinders in order for the "limp" chips to function correctly. You just need to load the modified SyTy bin into the EPROM. Also, the SyTy code is a 16K file, the SD code is 32K, therefore the bin must be loaded into the top half of the EPROM. I am planning on switching from a '730 ECM to a '749 sometime in the future (have both ECM's), unless I get up to speed on the assembly (code) side of things..then I'll just rework the '730 code for boost.

Mike's site:
http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~davis/z28/

This is a very detailed and lengthy undertaking, I know I was going to turbo my TPI, but researching the ECM swap I realized I was biting off more than I could chew at one time..cheers, Bob

Bob,

Thank you again for all of your help! I have the 730 SD ECM. Do you know of anyone who has the conversion done and the steps to modify a connector to go from the 749 to the 730 wiring harness? Also, will a stock Z28 memcal fit into teh 749 ecm?

The '730 and '749 are cousins, they share the same connectors and 95% of the wires are in the same or equivelent positions. I don't know anyone personally but I believe Grumpy has run '749 swap. The memcals are interchangable, the difference is in the resister nests and limp home chips.

The only tough thing about doing any kind of swap is deciding how you are going to go about doing it. You have options galore.

1) You buy butt connectors and splice every wire into it's new location. To do this, you essentially cut wires about 5 inches from the ECM connectors and have a bundle of wires that need to be relocated. This would be a messy way to go about doing things, would lead to eventual butt splice failure if you are constantly relocating the ECM and is pointless except for rare cases.

2) You remove pins from the ECM connector 1 at a time. Get a pack of write-on label marker tabs (they are packaged flat, you write on them with a fine tip permanent marker, and are heat shrinkable) at your local electronic storehouse (probably not RS). When you remove a pin, mark on the label which pin it originally went to. Then, with a different color marker, put another label on the wire where you WANT it to go to. The wire sleves I am talking about are similar to heat shrink tubing, but allow you to write on them before you shrink it. To unpin the connectors, go on down to PepBoys and get the terminal removal tool or do what I did. I made my removal tool by taking a small tie-wrap and cut it in half lengthwise. This then slipped into the tanged slot perfectly and made pin removal from the connector super simple.

3) Make an adapter harness. Go down to the junkyard and clip off the ECM connectors that your new ECM uses. Then, take a junk ECM and remove the header connector (or find a company that sells GM connectors...I think I have seen the link on here before, like Packard Electronics or something). Conjure up a good way to make the adapter by running your header connector to your original harness, then run a wire to the new location on the new ECM connector. This method is perhaps the most convenient when trying to troubleshoot stuff because you can just unplug the adapter and throw your original ECM in.

I used method 2 and it has worked flawlessly for me (went from 870 to 730). Figure on 4 hours or a long weekend depending on your abilities.

Well, lemme put it this way. The actual thinking process takes about a week (i.e. figuring out which wires will go where, what method you want to use, acquisition of parts). Once you are ready to go however, the actual dirty work goes fairly quickly. -Matt-
