How much of an improvement would I see from a custom chip?

After a couple of thousand miles of break-in driving I've started playing with the car. However, I feel that it hasn't gained as much as it should have and think this is down to a couple of things.

1: My MAF sensor does not work at all.

2: I'm using the stock chip.

3: I could do with a bigger throttle body and LTRs

I'm getting a wells MAF hopefully next week but I was wondering if a custom chip would help me a lot? If so, any idea how much I would gain?

My car and mods are in the sig.

Thanks for the help guys

Rob

I have somewhat similar mods ( 2032 cam), 1.6 RR, headers, saimesed base, AFPR (51 psi) 19 lb injectors, cat, muffler, cold air, it's a 5 speed w/ 3.42 gears. and an SLP chip.

Anyways, adding the cam, RR, base, and fuel pressure I only got .2 sec and ~1 mph in the 1/4 running the SLP chip.

With the stock chip about 1 hr earlier in the night I ran .8 sec slower and 5+ mph slower. Which is also .6 sec and 5 mph slower than the car ran with a stock long block, cam, intake etc. with the SLP chip. I'm sure a custom chip will give me at least another .2 sec and 2-3 mph(since I gained ~.3 sec and 3 mph in the 1/8 mile).

I'm saying for my combo a custom chip would be worth up to 1.0 sec and maybe 7-8 mph over the stock chip.

Side note, running the stock chip felt like I never put the cam in my car at all. .7 sec and 5mph between the 2 chips is a huge difference and neither is a custom chip meant for my application now.

14.6 @ 96 with headers, cold air, SLP chip(74 mph 1/8 mlie)

14.4 @96.8 with cam, 1.6 RR, siamesed base, 51 psi fuel pressure etc. with SLP chip.(77mph 1/8 mile)(slight miss shift/hit rev limiter 1-2shift)

15.2 @ 91 mph with cam... etc and STOCK chip.

In future mods you have a S/C.
Might as well bite the bullet and convert over to SD, and get that out of the way, cause you'll never get the S/C breathing right thru a MAF.

While you can jockey things around and get WOT 1/2 close, all the drivilibity stuff gm does is for a car that is driven in the Mojave, and Fairbanks, never gets the oil changed, with a plugged air filter, If you happen to not do any ot those things then you can optimize the calibration for how you drive the car, and you'll never believe what a FULLY optimised chip is like.

Thanks for the replies. I'll start looking around for a custom chip.

Maybe you're thinking of Ed Wright at Fast Chip? http://www.fastchip.com/

I gained 15 HP and 12 TQ on a dyno by tuning and burning chips for my car...

If you are planning a Supercharger FORGET any custom eprom EXCEPT your own AND using a WB O2 sensor PERIOD.

As Bruce said, Superchargers present their own difficulties and if you try and use an ECM NOT designed for a power-adder, then you will need to do a "kludge" via the "%Change Fuel Add with PE".

I have successfully used this to help a friend with a potent 383 MAF car that maxes the MAF and we are just getting ready to use a WB O2 Sensor to "dial it in".

Supercharging presents even more problem for MAF cars and SD is the better route to go, even with the "kludge". But if you are thinking of "buying a custom eprom" you are wasting your time. Because the "eprom writer" will have NO IDEA what your engine is running like and even if you "capture scan data", you really need some WB O2 sensor feedback because you have to "tune blind" via the "% Fuel Add with PE".

Besides, the cost of buying a custom eprom is probably going to exceed the cost of the equipment and the WB O2 sensor (excluding the sensor). That's a lot of money to spend on something that is surely going to be "less than optimal".

It was fastchips.com that I was thinking about. Thanks for that.

I was origionally going to buy the stuff and do it myself. I read through Traxions tech article. All I know about burning PROMS is from that article and I don't know if that's enough. I wouldn't know what to parameters to change.

Should I just buy the stuff then and start asking questions here?

Thanks again

That is what I am doing, I just did my first 8 chips over the weekend. All I am working on are the VE/ RPM/ MAP and have seen an improvement in the way the car ideals. It just takes time to learn, but in the long run you will get a lot better running car.
