Higher Output Alternator

Would it harm my electrical system to buy a larger amp alternator than stock? Right now I have a 100amp alternator, and I have underdrive pulleys that make it spin slower thus less power. The alternator puts out enough power right now, but if I want to add any components that draw more power I'll need to take off the pulleys, or get another alternator. I would assume the voltage regulator would keep things in check no matter how much output the alternator has, but I am just taking a guess. Anyone who could give me some help thanks.

All your assumptions are correct.

You can get the BIGGEST alternator that your wallet will allow you.

But keep in mind that a alternator's max ratings are usually at or above 1000rpm's. So if you are at idle at 500-700rpms, with underdrive pulleys, you could still be underpowering the system while sitting at a long red traffic signal.

It's not really that big of a deal. I have a 200amp alternator, and if i hit a long red light, i just kick it in neutral and bring up the rpm's a little.

Where did you get your alternator from?

Try running a search for the iceburg conversion kit. I don't know if the pricing on it matches what you want, or if you want to do that work yourself, but seems to be worth looking into. Now that I think about it, they offer complete alternators as well. Don't remember the web site, but it's on the boards somewhere.

Website is www.alternatorparts.com , they have new alt's at very good prices, also handle OE(Delco) repair parts as well as the Iceberg kit. I recently purchased the Iceberg full kit and upped to the 140 amp stator. Output is slightly lower at idle, but all in all I am VERY happy with the repair. Beats the hell out of 200 or more for an AC rebuild. One thought, read the repair paperwork VERY carefully before cracking the old unit apart. You will also need a soldering gun. Drop me an e-mail if you choose to do the work yourself- got a couple of tricks to make life a little easier.
