how to activate daytime running lights
My '89 RS 305 was imported from California in '96 (not before some sh*t clocked it back 50k miles! I might add), and I believe I have DRL, see pic. How are these activated in normal circumstances? One assumes I could easily patch in from the side lights to run them on dip?

I live in Canada where all cars manufactured since Nov/89 are required to have DRL's. I also lived in the US recently and went through the process of importing three vehicles to Canada when we moved back. Your post raises a couple of issues;
Firstly, IMHO no US soldcars the age of yours had DRL installed from the factory.
Secondly, most cars with DRL's actually have a different wiring harness that will accept the DRL switch and the module that reduces the intensity of the lights while DRL's are on. We have a US bought 1995 Mark VIII that still doesn't have DRL's, although it is required to, because the wiring harness simply doesn't accomodate the DRL swith etc.
In case your real question was simply how do they work, in Canada your headlights only (no park lights) come on when the car is started and being driven. Some vehicles are wired so that the DRL's are on all the time the ignition key is on and some are wired so that the DRL's only come on when the parking brake is release, or it is taken out of Park etc.
Hope this helps.

If I read you correctly the DRL's were just side lights operating all the time. Have a look at the picture below, I thought the lamps in the front clip were the DRL's, or are they front fogs. (There are no switches in the car to operate these lights.)

You could easily rig up a relay to turn on your parking lights when you start your car. Your parking lights light up the front to turn signals.
IROC Z,
What sort of relay, and how? I not great on auto-electrics (did manage to hardwire a fan switch with a separate LED last weekend though
).
p.s. How do you insert a graphic under your user name in the posts?
Thanks.
