Speedometer Connection
Speedometer Connection
Sorry if this an easy question, but I'm a newbie and need some guidance. I have an 86 TA with an electronic speedometer control. The speedometer is not working. I have taken the dash appart and traced all the electrical connections. From the yellow buffer box to the speedometer are there and connected properly. I remeber reading somwhere that the yellow and purple wires coming out of the yellow box go to the vss in the transmission. I found that and they are not connected there, so i know that is the problem. I trace the yellow and purple wires. They go back into the dash, continue tracing them, and find out that there is only like a foot of wire and a connector. That connector is not the connector that would fit the transmission. My question is, does that connection get plugged in to somthing behind the dash, or am i going to have to patch in some cable and run the to a new connector down to the VSS (btw, anyone know the best way to do this) and which side of the connector does each wire go to or does it matter. Also, my tach is not hooked up either, but that isn't really a problem since the car is an automatic. My other problem is with the neurtal safty switch and the backup lights. The connector that goes to the shifter is not connected to the shifter, but i was wondering if that conrtoled the fact that the key can only turn in neutral or park. The car starts in any gear now which kinda bothers me because if that switch isn't hooked up it is my understanding that the car shouldn't start at all. anyone have any ideas what else needs to be hooked up besides this connector to get the neurtal safty switch and backup lights to work. (I need these to work to pass inspection) Thank you all for you Help!!!

From: out of my mind; be back in 5 minutes....
Car: 1989 Firebird Formula
Engine: Internal Combustion
Transmission: Completed
Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
There is a connector in the wiring between the yellow buffer box and the 'bundle of wires' (from the ECM, etc.) that pass through behind the passenger's side kick panel; those continue straight on to the sending unit on the transmission. It doesn't matter which color wire goes to which terminal of that sending unit.
There should be two cables from the shifter mechanism - one goes to the tranny, the other up into the steering column; not exactly sure what goes on in there, as I only have experience with manual transmissions.
The reverse lights are activated by a switch in the shifter, and I don't think the car should start with that connection undone (but not 100% sure). It sounds like a previous owner has done some 'modifying' to bypass a bad switch in the shifter.
That's about all I can offer...
