Getting a free modded 91Z28 350, need help with swap

Well, it's a great thing, kinda. My buddy rang himself in way over his head in debt and his is filing for bankruptsy. Since his other car, which happens to be a 14.0 sec Z28 is one of them, he is going to screw the bank and said he would give me the motor. Well I would die for this cause I have a p.o.s. LG4. My car is yes, an 87 and I want to know how much it will take to do the swap. He is filing on monday so we figure we have 2 monthes to set a date. I figure it should take us 3 days, 1 for the motor swappings and the other for the wiring. Any help especially with the wiring is greatly appreciated. I have a 5 speed also, and I know it won't last with that motor. What do you think I need to do to the tranny also? I am very excited about this because the best part about it is it's free. The motor only has 50k on it! Thanks in advance.

The job will most likely take more than 3 days. The wiring harness to the ECM must be swapped, and the fuel pumps must be swapped - the LG4 has only a 3 psig pump in the tank, while the '92 has a high pressure (> 50 psig) pump in the tank. The LG4 does not have a fuel injection type filter in the fuel line, under the chassis, so one will have to be added to your '87 to keep the injectors from clogging. Also, the '92 uses a electronic VSS, built into the ECM, where the '87 uses a cable speedo, and a VSS on the instrument cluster. It is possible to do the swap, but you will need both service manuals from Helm, and lots of patience.

Forgot to mention.....The fuel lines and sending unit assembly mounted to the tank will also have to be swapped, since the LG4 does not have high pressure O-ring type connections, and the fuel lines enter the engine compartments on opposite sides - LG4 on the RH side, and LB9 / L98 on the LH side.

Is that true? I thought they only had a mechanical fuel pump on the block? I have never heard of an electric fuel pump on the LG4 cars.....

Or You Could just Carb the 350 And Make it a Direct Bolt In, 1 day Job with 2 ppl.

That will keep you emissions legal too

Jeremy,

The in tank fuel pump was used on '85 VIN G and '87 VIN H & G carbed setups. In '84 the in tank pump was only used on the EFI L4 VIN LQ5. Check out page 4 of the Computer Command Control at http://www.geocities.com/vtcamaro/Wire-Diagrams.html for the '85 in tank fuel pump setup diagram.

That just confused me for a second, because I have a mechanical fuel pump (LG4), and wondered if it had been added at some point or something.. which would mean it might be sucking through a dead in-tank pump, which might be restricting fuel flow big time.. but I guess the '84's didn't have the electric fuel pump at all.. thanks for clearing that up.

I'd swap it using your carb. I didn't realize until now that the LG4 made it to 87, did it get rollers like all the other engines?

Can't he just say that the '91 Z28 is a ten year old piece of junk and sell the whole car to you for $100 or something? Or maybe do a VIN swap.

Yes, the '87 LG4 has the (peanut) roller cam and a knock sensor - and 9.3:1 CR, which is up from 8.6:1, in '82 - '84, but down from 9.5:1, in '85 - '86......

Oops...make that an LQ9, not an LQ5.
