GMTECH-PLEASE READ!

Hopefully you have dealt with this problem before. My 89 iroc tpi fails to restart sometimes. Does not matter if it is hot or cold. If you wait about 5-10 min. it will start with no drivability problems. I know it is not the VATS,injector leak down. Could I be experiencing a fuel pump/relay problem? My car has done this for years and I just can't deal with it anymore. You know the FORD guys "that f@#$%& chevy won't start at the tree again!

When you say it fails to start, will it spin over or not crank at all?

If it will spin over, the possibilities are endless. The best way to find out is to start checking for things when it acts up. Does it have fuel pressure? Spark? Injector pulse? Its very hard to diagnose when it starts up fine, so you will have to wait untill it won't start, and start investigating.

Carry some starting fluid with you and the next time it doesn't start spray it in the throttle body and try starting, chances are it will fire right up and will run normally.
The ignition module will cause this problem.

GMTech,
I still have not changed my ignition module yet, it hasn't acted up in a month now since it's been real cold. Knock on wood....
I'm waiting on front end parts right now before I go to the track. I heard they're closing Savannah Dragway soon.

Where did you hear that from? I didn't think it was that public. The lady who I guess owns it says the land has been sold. To bad they couldn't just dig everything up and plant it in my back yard!

I guess it will be L&L in Hinesville (eeek!) after this year.

I know the owner, he works at my work as a mechanic.

I hate it when I hear good strips biting the dust. America needs places like these to let the kids race somewhere, and NOT on the roads. oh well what are you gonna do eh

John-
The starter fluid worked! What makes you think it is the ignition module? Isn't this fuel related?

John and I have discussed this for quite some time now. The ignition module controls the ignition timing when the RPMs are less then 400 RPM (cranking speed) known as "bypass mode". The ignition module also passes along the pulses from the pickup coil to the ECM for injector control. We have agreed that for some reason, while the ignition module is in "bypass mode" the pickup coil's pulses are never being sent, hence the "no start". But when you spray the starting fluid and the vehicle actually makes it past 400 RPMs, the Ignition Module switches to EST (computer constrolled timing) and lets the pulses go to the ECM and then fires the injectors. Johns car is doing this, but we havn't actually put a module in yet to prove it, but we really think thats it.

For what's its worth. Starting fluid (ether) is really tough on the valves/seats as you can tell by the way the engine sounds when you crank it over and you think its coming apart. Try holding the front throttle plate open and spaying WD-40 into the intake. WD-40 lights up in everything from 2-stroke weed eaters to the 350 in my wife's Olds 98 with no clattering noises.

O.K. This is starting to make sense.Could having my timing too far advanced also cause the no start? I don't think the timing is off because the car just passed smog test hear in Ca. with my zz4.Anyone know how I can get my picture in the members rides section?

If it was your timing to far advanced, then it would fail to start every time. Not now and then, not after five minutes, but all the time. Put a module in it and let us know if it does it again.
