VSS PROB.. HELP !!!
VSS PROB.. HELP !!!
I got a code #24 (vss circuit failure) and my speedo doesn't work now. I have an 87 Iroc-350/at. I was told that the VSS in on the tailshaft, but Mitchell-on-Demand at work says its behind the speedo. Where is it ? And would that make my speedo not work ? I've called around for a new VSS and the only place that I found that could get one was the dealer for $50. Is there anywhere else that would sell them. I need this fixed like yesterday cause the cops REALLY think I'm made of money. HELP !!

It might be the cable itself. If it doesn't turn your speedometer, the VSS won't put out a signal. It's behind the speedometer by the way. It wasn't on the transmission itself until 90 I think.
And a new cable is cheap and you could do it in an afternoon yourself with a little cursing and help from someone with really skinny arms.
Take out the gauge cluster and turn the speedometer from the back by hand (forward! not backwards!) and see if that bumps the needle. Then have someone go underneath and turn the other end of the speedo cable while you watch inside to see if the other end turns.

The VSS is the electric speedometer. At least as far as l understand. That means that there are no cables. Just a pulse counter.
You should have an electric unit in the tail of the transmission, same place as stock cable gear. Just not a cable. Only a wire or two.
On the back of the speedometer you have a circuit board that interprets information. So both are right.

Jza is correct - if the speedo is reading zero, it's probably the speedo cable or the speedo gears in the tailshaft of the trans. The VSS is on the rear of the cluster until '90, unless you have a pre '90 factory digital dash.

I spent almost 4 hours workin on it today, the lil tip was broken off the end of the speedo cable in the end of the tailshaft. what a PITA getting the gauge cluster out ! I put the new cable in and it works fine now. Thanx for the help :-) Later,
Chris
